A steep selloff across the foreign exchange market swept through the US Dollar on Wednesday, providing strong upward momentum for major global currencies led by the British Pound. Early returns from the US midterm elections have sharply increased the likelihood of legislative gridlock in Washington. This rising political unpredictability triggered a fresh slide in US Treasury yields, driving the US Dollar Index down to its weakest level since late September.
Pound Sterling Gains Upward Traction Toward Key Resistance
According to Quek Ser Leang and Lee Sue Ann from United Overseas Bank (UOB), the upward momentum in GBP/USD has gathered noticeable strength following recent market advances. In the intraday window, the British Pound (GBP) is projected to hold comfortably above the 1.3410 threshold, creating room for a push toward 1.3480. Should that momentum sustain, market strategists view 1.3510 as the subsequent major technical ceiling.
Looking across a broader one to three-week trading horizon, the analysts reaffirmed their constructive outlook, stating,
"We will continue to hold the same view as long as 1.3385 is not breached."This stance builds upon their positive assessment originally outlined after spot traded at 1.3410 on 03 November. The benchmark for key support has now been lifted to 1.3385 from the prior 1.3360 floor, with 1.3510 standing as the prime level to watch once 1.3480 is tested.
Midterm Vote Dynamics Weigh Heavily on the Greenback
The US Dollar Index, which gauges the Greenback against a weighted basket of major global trading partners, encountered relentless selling pressure throughout Wednesday's Asian session. The descent pushed the benchmark index to its lowest standing since late September. The primary catalyst behind the slide was the emergence of early US midterm election results showing Democratic victories across both the House and the Senate, pointing toward extended political gridlock in the capital.
Heightened political ambiguity quickly revived demand for safe-haven destinations, which in turn prompted a decisive leg lower in US government bond yields. This compression in yields effectively counteracted market wagers regarding Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, stripping the Dollar of its yield advantage and accelerating liquidation across trading desks.
Movements Across USD/JPY and AUD/USD Currency Pairs
The ripple effects of Dollar depreciation were clearly visible across Asian foreign exchange desks. USD/JPY faced intense selling interest on Wednesday, breaking below the 158.00 mark during the Asian trading hours as the Greenback fell to a one-month trough. The simultaneous decline in US bond yields and the rush toward safe-haven assets reinforced bids for the Japanese currency, compounding pressure on the pair.
Meanwhile, AUD/USD maintained stability above its recent two-week nadir, hovering near 0.6965 during Wednesday's Asian session. Although the retreating US Dollar offered clear tailwinds, the Australian Dollar encountered an internal ceiling due to a less hawkish stance from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). This divergence kept the Aussie in a tighter trading band compared to the sharp upswing seen in the British Pound.
Gold Holds Strong Intraday Gains Beyond $4,000
Precious metals mirrored the broader market realignment, with Gold holding firmly to powerful intraday advances near its weekly high. During the early European session, bullion traded comfortably above the key $4,000 psychological threshold, buoyed by the broad retreat of the Greenback.
The combination of safe-haven capital reallocations, declining US yields, and shifting political power dynamics in Washington has created a supportive environment for bullion. Market participants continue to track the policy implications of these election outcomes, as currency market realignments shape global asset valuations.
