Global financial assets kicked off the new trading week with mixed momentum across major currencies, commodities, and digital tokens. Leading the movement, the British Pound gained upward traction against the Japanese Yen, pushing back toward the 210.00 psychological threshold during early European market hours. Despite this upward momentum, spot prices have largely remained confined within the familiar trading range established over the past week, prompting traders to seek sustained buying interest before committing to larger directional positions.
Fiscal Pressure Weighs on Yen Amid Intervention Speculation
A confluence of macroeconomic factors drove the latest climb in the GBP/JPY cross. Japan's ongoing fiscal challenges continue to undermine the Japanese Yen, while a slight downtick in the US Dollar provided a supportive backdrop for the British Pound. Nevertheless, market participants remain mindful of currency intervention risks from Japanese authorities, which could potentially limit further declines in the Yen. Market attention is now shifting toward Bank of England (BoE) Governor Bailey, who is scheduled to deliver a speech later this week.
The USD/JPY currency pair mirrored this range-bound pattern, holding above the 158.00 level. Bullish traders navigated cautiously due to speculation that official intervention could occur to support the Yen. Concurrently, softer US Treasury bond yields kept Dollar bulls contained and capped the pair's upside. Thin liquidity conditions, stemming from market holidays in both Japan and the United States, coincided with prevailing geopolitical uncertainties to provide underlying support for the safe-haven US Dollar.
Performance of the Australian Dollar and Indian Rupee
Trading in the AUD/USD pair saw an early bearish gap filled on Monday, though the exchange rate remained suppressed below 0.7000 throughout the Asian session amid subdued holiday volume. An attempted rebound by the US Dollar, even as US Treasury yields retreated from multi-year peaks, restrained the pair. Adding to the resistance, diminishing market expectations of another interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in November kept the Australian currency capped.
Meanwhile, the Indian Rupee (INR) recorded a strong start against the US Dollar, sustaining recovery gains around the 95.80 zone. The USD/INR pair encountered downward pressure following proactive regulatory interventions by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The central bank introduced fresh measures designed to curb US Dollar demand, bringing timely support to the local currency.
Precious Metals Retract and Crude Oil Drops
In commodities, gold witnessed renewed selling interest after momentarily touching a one-week high earlier on Monday. The precious metal slipped back beneath the $4,200 threshold during the European trading session, effectively ending a two-session winning streak. A hawkish stance maintained by the US Federal Reserve lent stability to the greenback, limiting potential gains for non-yielding bullion.
Crude oil markets also faced downward pressure. Energy prices declined on optimistic sentiment surrounding a Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire agreement. Market participants anticipate that such an accord could alleviate global fuel supply constraints and subsequently dampen inflationary pressures across international economies.
Cardano Reclaims Support in Digital Asset Trade
Within the cryptocurrency sector, Cardano (ADA) managed to reclaim ground above its primary support zone on Monday, recovering from a 2.85% pullback recorded last week. This technical recovery was backed by improving derivatives positioning and a constructive technical framework. According to derivatives analytics from CoinGlass, trader sentiment around Cardano improved, with the long-to-short ratio reaching 1.01 on Monday to flip into positive territory.
