Farming across the steep gradients of mountainous terrain has always presented severe logistical hurdles for growers in Himachal Pradesh. To tackle the strenuous task of hauling produce across difficult slopes, an inventive transport initiative is currently taking shape in the Sundernagar area of Mandi district. In Palauhta village, work is in the final stages on the state's very first horticultural monorail pilot project. Designed to navigate orchards spread across rugged hillsides, this dedicated track system aims to modernize how agricultural yields move from interior plantation terraces to the nearest motorable roads.
Successful 300-Metre Track Trial in Palauhta Cluster
The ground implementation of this system is being carried out under the aegis of the Palauhta-2 Cluster Fruit Producers and Marketing Association. Munish Sharma, president of the association, stated that the cluster spans an extensive area of 21.5 hectares. The primary phase envisions establishing a monorail route covering a distance of about one kilometre. As part of this initial rollout, construction of approximately 300 metres of track has already been completed, followed by a fully successful test run. Local growers remain optimistic that the government will soon sanction the expansion of the setup so that the monorail network can blanket the entire 21.5-hectare cluster.
Support and Initiative from Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi
The realization of this innovative transit mechanism received notable momentum from Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi, who took a keen interest in bringing the concept to fruition. His backing helped align administrative encouragement with local farming needs, enabling growers to experiment with advanced infrastructure. The fruit growers' association credits this proactive ministerial focus for the swift execution of the pilot, expressing confidence that ongoing governmental backing will pave the way for broader agricultural modernizations in the region.
Relief from Steep Terrain for Crop and Fertilizer Transit
Carrying harvested fruits down steep slopes and lugging heavy compost uphill have traditionally required immense manual labour. The newly laid monorail will smoothly transport harvested produce as well as fertilizers between disparate points across the cluster. Highlighting these practical difficulties, local grower Sanjay Saklani shared that although the horticulture department had established the cluster in their village, the absence of connecting roads created persistent transport hurdles. Hauling heavy fertilizer bags into the orchards and moving ripe fruit out proved challenging, making the monorail an ideal operational alternative.
Echoing similar sentiments, orchardist Devi Singh pointed out that constructing paved roadways to every single hill terrace is practically impossible given the rugged topography. He emphasized that the monorail provides an ingenious solution tailored specifically to mountain farmers, eliminating the physical exhaustion and safety hazards associated with manually carrying heavy loads across uneven terrain.
Engineered with Technical Guidance from IIT Mandi
The structural and operational feasibility of the track was validated through rigorous engineering oversight. A specialized team from the mechanical and civil engineering departments at IIT Mandi conducted a comprehensive technical feasibility study before ground implementation commenced. Their assessments ensured that the track design could reliably handle mountain slopes, soil variations, and agricultural cargo weights.
Distributor Tejender Saini, who is executing the installation on the ground, described the undertaking as a unique operational milestone. He explained that required equipment and specialized hardware components were sourced from multiple destinations to complete the installation. Saini pointed out that horticultural monorail technology is already widely deployed across farming sectors overseas. With Sundernagar demonstrating the viability of the system on steep Himalayan inclines, expectations are high that identical monorail installations will soon be replicated across other horticulture clusters throughout Himachal Pradesh.
