The Indian equity benchmarks witnessed a volatile trading session on the final day of the week, August 14, eventually closing with minor losses amid selective profit-taking across key sectors. Selling pressure in automobile, metal, energy, and pharmaceutical counters dragged the benchmark indices down from their intraday levels. By the end of trading, the 30-share BSE Sensex dropped by 70.71 points to close at 78,009.25, while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty slipped 29.85 points to settle at 24,366.
Market Breadth and Overall Advance-Decline Ratio
The broader market demonstrated a mixed trajectory throughout the session, though declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones. Out of the total shares traded on the National Stock Exchange, 1,855 stocks managed to register gains by the closing bell. Conversely, 2,244 stocks recorded declines, and 174 shares ended flat with no change in their closing prices. This advance-decline setup highlighted underlying caution among investors despite relatively modest losses in the headline benchmark indices.
Sectoral Trends and Broader Market Indices
Analyzing performance across industry verticals, heavy selling was observed in auto, energy, FMCG, metal, pharma, and realty sectors, which declined between 0.3 percent and 1 percent. On the flip side, consumer durables and media indices bucked the negative trend, gaining approximately 1 percent each by the end of the session.
In the broader market segments, weakness was equally evident. Investor profit-booking caused the Nifty Midcap index to drop by 0.5 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap index experienced a steeper decline of 0.7 percent.
Top Gainers and Losers in Nifty 50
Among individual Nifty 50 constituents, Apollo Hospitals emerged as the top gainer with a surge of 3.71 percent. It was followed by Bharti Airtel, which gained 2.73 percent, Adani Enterprises with a rise of 2.53 percent, Adani Ports advancing 2.41 percent, and Wipro adding 0.49 percent.
On the losing side, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) was the worst performer, falling sharply by 4.46 percent. Other prominent laggards included Jio Financial, which slid 2.19 percent, ONGC dropping 1.9 percent, Asian Paints falling 1.83 percent, and State Bank of India (SBI) shedding 1.62 percent.
