Indian equity markets kicked off the final trading session of the week on Friday, August 14, on a weaker note, with widespread selling pressure dampening investor sentiment right from the opening bell. The BSE Sensex fell by 315.67 points during early trade to stand at 77,764.29, while the NSE Nifty dropped 78.40 points to trade around 24,317.45, breaching the 24,350 mark. Weakness across IT, auto, and metal stocks primarily dragged down the headline indices during early market hours.

Heavyweight Stocks Pull Down Benchmark Indices

According to the Sensex heatmap, selling in index heavyweights directly impacted the benchmark performance. Tata Steel emerged as one of the prominent losers, shedding 1.41 percent. Tech Mahindra slid 1.27 percent, Axis Bank lost 1.19 percent, Indigo dropped 1.18 percent, and PowerGrid moved down by 1.11 percent. Tech and energy majors also experienced selling, with TCS down 0.15 percent, HCL Tech down 0.78 percent, and Reliance Industries falling 0.49 percent. On the other hand, Infosys traded flat with a nominal gain of 0.01 percent.

Despite the broader market decline, select individual stocks showed resilience and traded in positive territory. Eternal gained 1.27 percent to reach ₹322.05, while Titan Company rose 0.63 percent to trade at ₹5,082.50. Other gainers included Adani Ports up 0.44 percent, Bajaj Finance up 0.38 percent, and Bharti Airtel advancing 0.05 percent. In the Nifty 50 space, Apollo Hospital led the top gainers list with a 1.41 percent increase, followed by Eternal at 0.5 percent, Bajaj Finance at 0.48 percent, Adani Ports at 0.45 percent, and Wipro at 0.44 percent. Conversely, the top Nifty 50 losers were led by TMPV, which dropped 4.09 percent, alongside Hindalco falling 1.9 percent, Max Healthcare down 1.28 percent, Jio Financial losing 1.02 percent, and SBI slipping 0.96 percent.

Sectoral Performance and Market Breadth

Across sectoral indices, almost all sectors except Consumer Durables were trading in the red. The Nifty IT index declined 0.47 percent to trade at 31,305.75, while Nifty FMCG dropped 0.39 percent and Nifty Bank fell by 0.16 percent. Both midcap and smallcap indices also traded with mild losses. Despite the index drop, the market breadth remained relatively balanced, as approximately 1,576 stocks advanced, 1,185 stocks declined, and 150 stocks remained unchanged during early trading.
