Indian equity benchmarks began the trading session on Tuesday, 27 October on a cautious note, sliding into negative territory almost immediately after the opening bell. Subdued cues from global financial markets weighed heavily on domestic investor sentiment, prompting widespread profit taking in heavyweight counters. In spite of the downward pressure on headline indices, trading remained active across several consumer and defensive pockets, preventing an outright rout across the broader exchange floor.
Opening Declines for Benchmark Indices
The BSE Sensex commenced trading with a decline of 225.19 points, or 0.31 percent, slipping to 73,381.56. Simultaneously, the broader NSE Nifty retreated by 61.80 points, or 0.27 percent, falling to 22,691.40. Despite the red ink on the headline meters, market breadth tilted slightly positive during the initial minutes of exchange. Approximately 1,244 stocks traded with gains, compared to 1,000 declining counters, while 158 stocks held flat with no price change.
Leading Gainers Led by Consumer and Auto Counters
Consumer goods and automotive counters managed to stand out amidst the broader market softness. Tata Consumer Products led the charge on the benchmark board, surging 3.25 percent in early deals. BSE Limited also logged notable traction, rising 1.89 percent, while two-wheeler manufacturer Bajaj Auto advanced 1.56 percent. Non-banking lender Shriram Finance climbed 1.47 percent, followed by healthcare provider Max Healthcare, which appreciated 1.34 percent. Buying momentum was additionally visible in NTPC, Sun Pharma, Eternal, Power Grid, Hindalco, and Adani Enterprises. State Bank of India and Kotak Mahindra Bank logged marginal movement, while several other banking names encountered mild headwinds.
Tech and Metal Stocks Under Sustained Pressure
Large-cap technology and materials stocks served as the primary drag on the markets. Software exporter Infosys witnessed the sharpest pullback among index heavyweights, tumbling 2.51 percent. Peers also suffered, with TCS shedding 1.29 percent and HCL Technologies trading firmly in the red. Fast-moving consumer goods giant Hindustan Unilever lost 1.40 percent, while Asian Paints slipped 1.16 percent. Within the metals space, JSW Steel fell 0.98 percent, with Tata Steel, Grasim, Reliance Industries, and ICICI Bank also facing selling pressure.
Sectoral Divergence Across Industry Baskets
Performance varied widely across different industry segments on the exchange. The Nifty IT index was the day's worst regional performer, tumbling 1.57 percent under the weight of major tech exits. The financial services basket also struggled, with Nifty Bank slipping 0.28 percent and Nifty Services dropping 0.52 percent. Conversely, safe-haven and defensive sectors found buyer backing: Nifty Pharma gained 0.61 percent, the state-run lender gauge Nifty PSU Bank advanced 0.51 percent, and the real estate basket Nifty Realty moved up 0.29 percent.
