The Indian Rupee kicked off September on a firmer footing as it moved below its 100-day moving average level of 95.15 on Tuesday, marking the first time it crossed below this line since July 2025. While central bank intervention by the Reserve Bank of India may have supported the currency in the short term, market strategists warn that underlying macroeconomic headwinds continue to pose structural tests. The currency faces an uphill battle against higher international crude oil prices and a hawkish monetary stance from the US Federal Reserve.
Strong GDP Growth Provides Domestic Cushion
Despite heavy external pressures, domestic economic momentum remains solid. India recorded a stronger-than-expected second-quarter GDP growth rate of 7.8% year-on-year, demonstrating that the domestic economy has effectively absorbed external economic shocks so far. Analysts at Societe Generale highlighted that while the impressive economic growth offers fundamental resilience, the broader global backdrop stays structurally demanding for foreign exchange markets.
Foreign Exchange Shifts Across Cable and Euro
Currency markets displayed divergent movements on Wednesday. The British Pound extended its declining trend against the Greenback, with GBP/USD retreating toward the 1.3470 level to hit a four-week low. Persistent geopolitical anxieties combined with a broad recovery in the US Dollar weighed heavily on Cable. Conversely, EUR/USD gathered upward momentum during the afternoon session, advancing toward the 1.1600 zone. The US Dollar faced selling pressure linked to potential foreign exchange intervention aimed at supporting the Japanese Yen, alongside economic data indicating weaker-than-anticipated US private sector employment growth in August.
Commodities Rally as Diesel Crack Spread Hits Record
Energy commodities maintained their upward trajectory, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude advancing for a third consecutive session and marking gains in five of the past six trading days. During Wednesday's Asian trading hours, WTI reached its highest point since July 24. Concurrently, the refined products market signaled tightening conditions as the US diesel crack spread, which measures the margin of ultra-low sulfur diesel futures over WTI crude, surged above $100 per barrel for the first time on record, hitting an intraday peak over $102.00.
Gold Rebounds while Cryptocurrencies Retrench
Precious metals experienced a swift turnaround on Wednesday. Gold (XAU/USD) staged a sharp rebound that effectively erased its earlier session losses, benefiting directly from a drop in the US Dollar triggered by a sudden surge in the Japanese Yen. Meanwhile, digital assets traded lower as market participants adopted a cautious tone. Bitcoin consolidated near its key technical support region around $77,000, while Ethereum slipped toward $2,400 and Ripple registered continued downside pressure.
