Meanwhile, in West Bengal's South Dinajpur district, law enforcement agencies executed a massive operation, destroying contraband cough syrup valued at Rs 20 crore using a road roller.
Owaisi Announces Rehabilitation and Legal Aid in Hyderabad
Addressing a large public gathering in Hyderabad, Asaduddin Owaisi highlighted the emergence of dangerous new synthetic drugs as a national concern. He emphasized that the increasing exposure of the younger generation to illicit substances poses a severe threat to the country's social fabric. Urging affected youth to come forward, Owaisi promised complete medical treatment for anyone seeking to overcome addiction. He assured that the identity of individuals seeking help would remain strictly confidential to protect them from social stigma.
In addition to rehabilitation support, Owaisi extended an olive branch to youth who had become entangled in drug distribution networks. He stated that those willing to abandon illegal activities would receive legal representation to handle pending court cases related to past offenses. Sharing a personal anecdote, Owaisi revealed that he had once struggled with unhealthy habits himself but managed to break free through strong willpower, maintaining a completely substance-free lifestyle today.
Road Roller Crushes Rs 20 Crore Worth Contraband in West Bengal
Concurrently, West Bengal has escalated its state-wide campaign against narcotics trafficking. At the Superintendent of Police office in Balurghat, South Dinajpur district, authorities carried out a public destruction of seized contraband on Wednesday. A total of 200,000 bottles of banned cough syrup, confiscated during joint operations by local police and the Border Security Force (BSF), were placed under heavy machinery. The estimated illicit market value of the destroyed inventory stood at Rs 20 crore.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari personally drove a road roller over the stacked bottles to demonstrate the state's aggressive stance against drug cartels. He was accompanied on the vehicle by Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and West Bengal Health Minister Dr. Sharadwat Mukherjee. The public crushing aimed to send an unequivocal message regarding the government's zero-tolerance policy toward narcotics smuggling.
Cross-Border Smuggling Operations and Enforcement Strategy
The destroyed goods primarily comprised Phensedyl and other prohibited codeine-based cough syrup brands. Border regions in West Bengal adjacent to Bangladesh have historically faced challenges linked to the illegal transport of codeine mixtures, which are frequently abused as intoxicants on both sides of the border. Strategic joint raids by the BSF and state police led to the interception and seizure of these massive stockpiles.
Following the operation, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari issued a direct warning to smuggling syndicates.
