Indian equity markets kicked off the trading week with a positive momentum, shaking off the recent sluggishness that had weighed on investor sentiment. Both benchmark indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, opened in the green, supported by buying interest in technology stocks and select heavyweights.
Right at the opening bell, the BSE Sensex climbed nearly 198 points to reach the 77,738.54 mark. Concurrently, the Nifty50 advanced by 44.25 points to trade at 24,296.25. Market breadth remained firmly in favor of the advances, reflecting improved confidence among investors. Data indicates that approximately 1,543 shares are currently trading in positive territory, while 920 shares are in the red, with 1,323 remaining unchanged.
Top Gainers Driving the Rally
Buying in metal and IT counters pushed several major stocks higher. Infosys led the pack with a 1.96% jump, taking its price to ₹1,143. HCL Tech advanced 1.44% to trade at ₹1,321.20, while Hindalco gained 1.33% to reach ₹1,047.80. Coal India moved up by 0.84% to ₹408.60, and HDFC Bank rose 0.81% to trade at ₹732.85. Other prominent equities witnessing positive momentum included Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra, TCS, and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Stocks Facing Downward Pressure
Conversely, select pharma and consumer-oriented stocks experienced selling pressure. Cipla emerged as one of the major laggards, slipping 1.28% to ₹1,413.80. Apollo Hospitals recorded a 0.72% decline, trading at ₹8,630. Titan and Grasim also saw modest losses ranging between 0.45% and 0.50%. Equities such as Bajaj Finance, Adani Ports, and Bajaj Finserv traded lower in the negative territory.
Sectoral Index Performance
Analyzing sectoral movements, Nifty IT outperformed by rising 0.96% to support the broader market. Gains were also registered in Nifty Energy, which grew by 0.48%, and Nifty Realty, up by 0.36%. On the other side of the spectrum, Nifty Pharma declined 0.66% and PSU Bank dipped 0.11%, continuing to face selling headwinds during the session.
