A sharp rally in technology heavyweights failed to rescue Indian equity markets from selling pressure on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The key benchmark gauges settled in the red during the mid-week trading session, erasing part of the previous day's robust advances as broad profit-taking took hold across financial, automotive, and industrial shares. By the final bell, the Sensex had fallen 0.34 percent, alongside a 0.44 percent decline in the Nifty index.
Benchmark Indices Retreat After Tuesday Gains
The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 251.89 points, or 0.34 percent, to conclude trading at 72,781.89. Concurrently, the broader 50-share NSE Nifty 50 gauge shed 99.25 points, or 0.44 percent, finishing the session at 22,622.70. The pullback followed a strong upswing on Tuesday, underscoring persistent volatility and selective profit-taking across core market sectors.
Market Breadth Skews Sharply Negative
Underlying market participation revealed widespread weakness across large-cap listings. Within the 30-stock Sensex pack, merely 11 constituents managed to finish in positive territory, leaving 19 stocks to log declines. The trend was mirrored across the Nifty 50 constituents, where only 16 scrips advanced while 34 ended the day in negative territory, highlighting the pervasive drag from non-technology names.
Infosys and Technology Counters Lead Gainers
The information technology sector stood out as the day's primary bright spot. Infosys emerged as the top gainer on the Sensex, climbing 2.51 percent. Peers Tech Mahindra and TCS also registered significant advances, rising 2.20 percent and 1.54 percent, respectively, while HCL Tech gained 0.61 percent.
A handful of non-IT constituents also supported the benchmark, led by Hindustan Unilever with an increase of 1.15 percent. NTPC climbed 0.87 percent, and index heavyweight Reliance Industries added 0.79 percent. Moderate gains were also recorded by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) up 0.58 percent, UltraTech Cement up 0.33 percent, ITC up 0.08 percent, and Kotak Mahindra Bank finishing virtually flat with an uptick of 0.02 percent.
NBFCs and Auto Stocks Drag on Market Performance
In contrast to the software counter strength, pronounced drops among banking, non-banking financial, and automotive heavyweights pulled the broader market downward. Non-banking financial company Bajaj Finance emerged as the day's worst performer on the Sensex, dropping 2.55 percent. Automaker Mahindra & Mahindra surrendered 2.24 percent, while Bajaj Finserv declined 1.99 percent.
Other noticeable laggards included Eternal, which slipped 1.68 percent, ICICI Bank down 1.54 percent, IndiGo falling 1.50 percent, and Sun Pharma shedding 1.14 percent. Engineering firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T) declined 1.06 percent, Adani Ports retreated 0.96 percent, Titan dropped 0.89 percent, and Trent slid 0.69 percent. Additional downward pressure stemmed from Asian Paints down 0.50 percent, HDFC Bank and Maruti Suzuki both losing 0.49 percent, Bharti Airtel falling 0.40 percent, Axis Bank and Power Grid each slipping 0.30 percent, Tata Steel declining 0.23 percent, and State Bank of India (SBI) shedding 0.18 percent.
