Midweek trading brought sharp pressure to domestic financial markets as key equity benchmarks finished in negative territory. By the closing bell, the BSE Sensex tumbled 352.64 points, or 0.48 percent, settling at 73,246.03. Simultaneously, the broader NSE Nifty 50 retreated by 50.90 points, representing a 0.22 percent decline, to finish at 22,698.85. This downward momentum extended the cautious tone from Tuesday, when indices closed with marginal losses, driven largely by sustained selling in heavyweights such as Reliance Industries alongside major information technology counters.
Mixed Advance-Decline Ratio Across Key Indices
Market breadth painted a contrasting picture across both headline indices during the session. Within the 30-share Sensex, bearish sentiment clearly dominated as only 9 constituents managed to stay in the green, while the remaining 21 stocks closed lower in the red. Conversely, the 50-share Nifty index displayed slightly more resilience under the surface. Out of its 50 basket constituents, 26 stocks finished with gains, whereas 24 ended in the red. However, the sheer weight of major index movers dragged the overall Nifty benchmark into negative territory despite the positive internal breadth.
Larsen & Toubro Surges While Reliance Slips
Engineering and infrastructure giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) led the gainers on Wednesday, climbing 3.68 percent to finish as the top performer within the Sensex index. In contrast, the market's largest firm by valuation, Reliance Industries, suffered the sharpest retreat of the day. Shares of Reliance slid 3.46 percent, leading the laggards and putting substantial downward pressure on the headline indices due to its significant market weighting.
Selective Buying Offers Support Across Pockets
Despite broader weakness, several companies found strong buying interest to cushion the decline. Retail player Trent posted a robust advance of 2.79 percent. State Bank of India added 1.23 percent and Axis Bank rose 1.14 percent, supporting public and private banking counters. Aviation company IndiGo registered a 1.13 percent rise. HDFC Bank gained 0.87 percent, automobile major Maruti Suzuki rose 0.83 percent, non-banking lender Bajaj Finance ticked up 0.47 percent, and Mahindra & Mahindra finished with a modest rise of 0.35 percent.
Broad Weakness Hits Tech, Telecom, And FMCG Counters
Widespread declines across technology bellwethers formed the core drag on market sentiment. Infosys led the tech retreat with a 3.34 percent slide, followed by Tech Mahindra down 1.83 percent and TCS sliding 1.68 percent, while HCL Tech dropped 1.13 percent. Telecommunications firm Bharti Airtel gave up 1.42 percent and Tata Steel decreased 1.37 percent. Financials experienced further selling as Bajaj Finserv lost 1.25 percent, ICICI Bank fell 1.02 percent, and Kotak Mahindra Bank eased 0.64 percent. Defence PSU BEL declined 1.20 percent, while Eternal slipped 1.21 percent. Consumer goods and defensive stocks also trended lower: Titan lost 0.62 percent, Hindustan Unilever shed 0.38 percent, ITC fell 0.38 percent, UltraTech Cement fell 0.35 percent, NTPC retreated 0.30 percent, Adani Ports eased 0.27 percent, Asian Paints declined 0.24 percent, Power Grid shed 0.16 percent, and Sun Pharma settled 0.11 percent lower.
