Shillong: The political landscape in Meghalaya is witnessing considerable movement as discussions intensify over legislators from regional and opposition parties potentially switching sides. The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has maintained an open stance regarding the possible induction of members from the United Democratic Party and the Trinamool Congress, though any concrete decision will ultimately be finalized by the party high command in New Delhi, according to senior leader Alexander Laloo Hek.
Awaiting Instructions from Delhi
The development has gained significant traction amid circulating reports that nine out of the 12 UDP MLAs, along with certain TMC legislators, are actively contemplating a transition to the BJP. Addressing these speculations on Monday, Hek clarified that the state-level organization lacks the jurisdiction to independently approve such high-profile inductions. He emphasized that matters concerning invitations to political figures and party expansions are strictly handled by national authorities, including party chairmen and North-East Democratic Alliance coordinators based in the national capital.
Current Coalition Dynamics
In the present legislative setup, the BJP holds two seats in the Meghalaya assembly and operates as a constituent of the ruling National People’s Party-led coalition government, whereas the TMC functions within the opposition bench. While acknowledging that political interactions and meetings have occurred in the past, Hek reiterated that the current deliberations are exclusively a matter for the central leadership to resolve. He stressed that state functionaries do not dictate these strategic decisions, as the entire framework of operation and policy direction originates directly from the central command.
Vision for the 2028 Elections
Despite the procedural requirements and uncertainties surrounding the proposed political realignment, the party leadership signaled a welcoming approach toward prospective joiners. Hek affirmed that the organization's doors remain accessible to anyone willing to align with its vision, setting a clear long-term target of establishing a BJP-led administration in the state during the 2028 assembly elections. He added that the collective effort remains dedicated toward fostering regional development, improving educational standards, and upgrading healthcare infrastructure across the state.

When questioned about the internal dynamics of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, Hek refrained from commenting on the specific understandings among coalition partners, noting that individual parties must speak for their own positions. Furthermore, addressing the ongoing war of words and mutual accusations among political opponents, he described blame games as an inherent and perpetual component of democratic politics.
