A fresh wave of friction has surfaced within the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance administration following the recent reshuffle of ministerial positions and department assignments. Cabinet Minister and BJP Legislature Party leader Sanbor Shullai publicly expressed reservations regarding the exercise, contending that the coalition leadership failed to give adequate weight to the saffron party despite its standing as the second-largest constituent in the state's 60-member Assembly.
Legislative Strength and Coalition Parity
Articulating the party's stance through a formal media statement, Shullai asserted that holding 10 legislative seats rightfully entitles the BJP to broader executive representation. He noted that discussions on this matter were formally initiated with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma soon after the vacancy created by former UDP president and minister Metbah Lyngdoh stepping down. While clarifying that the BJP holds no grievances regarding the induction of legislators from the NPP, Shullai maintained that relative numerical strength and alliance dynamics should have guided the distribution of ministerial offices and key departments.
Reflecting on Alliance Solidarity
Revisiting the delicate political landscape of 2023, Shullai pointed out that the BJP offered steadfast support to the NPP during critical moments when rival political outfits attempted to forge a non-NPP coalition. He emphasized that the ruling MDA continues to receive steady assistance and administrative backing from the BJP leadership at the Centre. Under these circumstances, he observed that treating state BJP legislators as marginal players sends an unhealthy signal across the governance framework.
Concerns Over Consultation and Future Course
Highlighting the broader ramifications of the reshuffle, Shullai cautioned that sidelining coalition partners could erode mutual trust and undermine collaborative governance in Meghalaya. He stressed that the issue extends beyond securing ministerial chairs, touching fundamentally upon mutual consultation, dignity, and inter-party coordination. To address these developments, party legislators met with BJP North East co-incharge Rajiv Babber on Wednesday, briefing him on the political situation and outlining their reservations. Shullai stated that the leadership will refer the issue to national party leaders before formulating a final stance. In line with organizational guidance, he has already held discussions with the Chief Minister and both Deputy Chief Ministers, requesting a dedicated meeting between Sangma and all BJP legislators to resolve the impasse peacefully through mutual dialogue.
