Shillong Lajong FC launched their Indian Football League campaign in thrilling fashion on Saturday, clinching a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mohammedan SC at the Kalyani Stadium. With the match seemingly headed for a scoreless draw after an intense battle, late substitute Nelson Rymbai stepped up in the 90th minute to deliver the decisive blow, collecting all three points for the Meghalaya-based outfit.
Late Drama Seals the Opener
The turning point arrived in the dying seconds of regular time through an incisive offensive intervention. Substitute Abelson Jachi initiated the decisive sequence by aggressively challenging and dispossessing a Mohammedan defender near the edge of the 18-yard box. Jachi swiftly cut the ball back into the path of Rymbai, who kept his composure to drive a precise right-footed strike into the net, leaving the hosts stunned and with no time to respond.
Tactical Control Across the Pitch
Throughout the contest, Shillong dictated the tempo of the play, asserting dominance across broad stretches of the pitch. The visiting side stretched Mohammedan's backline by utilizing the wide corridors with great discipline. Damaitphang Lyngdoh and Joao Vitor de Paula Morais, widely known as Jota, remained constant threats in the attacking third, while captain Kenstar Kharshong and Overkindness L Mawnai orchestrated offensive movements from deep. Mohammedan, by comparison, deployed a cautious, compact shape, aiming to absorb pressure and hit back through swift transitions.
Frustration in Front of Goal
Despite crafting multiple scoring opportunities in the opening period, Shillong struggled to translate their superiority into goals. Their first major opportunity came in the 20th minute when defender Joedson dos Santos unleashed a stinging strike from distance. Mohammedan goalkeeper Nikhil Deka spilled the ball initially but managed to recover quickly before any attacker could capitalize. Moments later, intricate passing between Jota, Lyngdoh, and Everbrightson Sana carved out another dangerous opening, only for Mohammedan defender Juwel Ahmed Mazumder to intervene with an impeccably timed tackle.
Mohammedan attempted to establish a presence through midfield through F Lalremsanga, but their plans suffered an early setback when Lalremsanga picked up an injury, forcing coach Sudhir Mishra to send on Lalthankima. The hosts’ forward thrusts were mostly channeled through Thokchom Adison Singh down the right wing, though his penetrating runs yielded little penetration inside the penalty box.
The visitors nearly broke the deadlock four minutes before the interval. Jota picked out Sana with a sharp through ball, but Sana’s attempt to slip the ball past Deka at the near post was thwarted by a superb foot save. Two minutes later, Kenstar connected with a header from a dead-ball delivery, though Deka gathered comfortably. Mohammedan nearly snatched the lead themselves when captain Mahitosh Roy aimed a venomous left-footed attempt toward the far corner, compelling Shillong goalkeeper Ranit Sarkar to produce a full-stretch diving save with his fingertips to tip the ball wide. Shillong entered the break having fired 10 shots, but with only two on target, while both of Mohammedan’s attempts had forced saves.
Second-Half Gridlock Broken at the Death
Both sides emerged with greater attacking intent after the restart. In the 48th minute, Mohammedan defender Hira Mondal made a vital intervention to prevent Jota from pulling the trigger. Four minutes later, Mahitosh came agonizingly close once more, unleashing a long-range blast that drifted inches wide of the upright. Shillong counter-attacked through a delivery from Kenstar on the left, but Juwel Ahmed anticipated the threat to clear. Just as both teams appeared resigned to sharing the spoils, Rymbai produced the finishing touch to secure a winning start for Shillong Lajong.
