Marking five decades since its establishment, West Khasi Hills district brought its month-long Golden Jubilee celebrations to a formal close with a commemorative gathering at the New Nongstoin Playground. The landmark event provided a platform to reflect on the region's socio-economic evolution over the past half-century while paying tribute to the trailblazers who campaigned for Meghalaya's statehood.
Honouring Statehood Pioneers and Community Leaders
Nongstoin MLA Gabriel Wahlang graced the closing ceremony as the chief guest, joined by Rambrai-Jyrngam MLA R.G. Momin as the guest of honour. A standout highlight of the programme was the formal felicitation of statehood volunteers from West Khasi Hills, who were presented with awards and mementos in recognition of their active participation in the movement that secured statehood for Meghalaya between 1968 and 1972.
The event drew widespread participation from civil administration and traditional institutions. Notable attendees included Nongstoin MDC J. Iawphniaw, Mawshynrut MDC Rashir, Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, and Superintendent of Police H. Kharkongor, alongside district administrative personnel, educators, community elders, and traditional dignitaries such as the Syiem of Nongstoin, Paiem Phylla Singh Syiem.
Five Decades of Growth and Development Priorities
In his address to the gathering, Wahlang acknowledged the dedication of past and present political figures, traditional chieftains, civil servants, and grassroots citizens who helped build the district over the last 50 years. He observed that West Khasi Hills has registered meaningful advancements across critical sectors, including healthcare delivery, educational infrastructure, rural connectivity, agriculture, sports, and overall economic activity, even while navigating considerable terrain and logistical hurdles.
Wahlang simultaneously noted that maintaining this development trajectory requires uninterrupted dedication and cross-sectoral collaboration to ensure the district remains on par with broader regional growth. He expressed firm optimism about the future, underlining that shared civic responsibility between public authorities and citizens remains fundamental to driving lasting prosperity. He also expressed gratitude to the administrative blocks across the district for their active coordination during the month-long festivities.
Chief Ministerial Message and Cultural Highlights
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, unable to attend in person due to official scheduling commitments, extended his warm felicitations to the district through a dedicated video broadcast. He commended the citizens of West Khasi Hills on reaching this 50-year milestone and shared his wishes for the district's continued welfare and progress.
The commemorative programme also featured the screening of a historical documentary chronicling the origin, milestones, and transformation of West Khasi Hills across five decades. As dusk fell, the proceedings transitioned into vibrant live musical performances by local artistes. The Golden Jubilee milestone thus served both as a tribute to historic sacrifices and as a renewed charter for the district's upcoming development phase.
