The Chhuikhadan region in Chhattisgarh once commanded widespread acclaim across the state for its distinctive and fragrant betel leaves. The product held sway not only in local bazaars but also throughout neighboring districts. Over the years, diminishing market support, absent incentives, and shifting lifestyle habits caused the local crop to lose its footing. That fading legacy is now experiencing a remarkable turnaround thanks to an enterprising effort led by local village women who decided to reinvent the crop.
Self-Help Collective Takes the Lead
Operating since the year 2000, the Maa Bamleshwari women self-help group stepped forward to revive the prestige of Chhuikhadan betel leaves. A team of 12 women currently powers this collective, turning an endangered trade into a dependable livelihood. Group secretary Asha Mohbiya recalled that the renowned crop had previously suffered severe setbacks due to inadequate market reach and minimal institutional backing. As sales dropped, cultivation areas shrunk and farming households progressively moved away from the trade.
Value Addition Supported by Agriculture College
Determined to overturn this decline, the collective teamed up with the Chhattisgarh government and a local agriculture college to introduce value addition techniques. Instead of relying purely on conventional leaf sales, the women pivoted toward processed edible specialties. Working right from their households, they developed an inventive catalog comprising paan fresh mouth freshener, packaged beeda paan, betel leaf laddoos, herbal paan tea, and fine paan powder. Modern packaging was introduced to ensure longer shelf life and appealing presentation across commercial shelves.
Digestive Benefits and Commercial Outlets in Metros
Apart from offering an authentic flavor profile, these innovations carry well-known wellness characteristics. Betel leaves are traditionally valued for improving digestive health, eliminating bad breath, and delivering a clean burst of natural vitality. These qualities have generated strong customer interest beyond regional borders. Supplies are no longer restricted to Raipur; special wholesale and retail requests have started pouring in from major metropolitan centers such as Bombay and Hyderabad, with the group meeting scheduled delivery deadlines.
Generating 70,000 Rupees in Net Earnings
For the past six months, the 12 women have maintained steady, routine manufacturing cycles, leading to substantial financial independence. Their public showcase at the Rajyotsava festival in November registered 32,000 rupees in direct sales through a dedicated exhibition stall. To date, the enterprise has netted approximately 70,000 rupees in clear profit. As the group ramps up production volumes and taps fresh distribution networks, their business returns are set to expand further.
