Under its fourth presidency of the influential grouping, India is hosting the landmark 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12 to September 13, 2026. This gathering of major emerging economies comes at a critical juncture for international commerce and geopolitics. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a highly ambitious tone for the summit, advocating for a much deeper and more cohesive economic integration among the member nations. Emphasizing the collective weight of the bloc in the international financial landscape, the Indian leader put forward a structured framework to evaluate and accelerate the progress of the coalition on an annual basis, driving a transition from rhetoric to concrete action.
Maritime Security Amid Geopolitical Friction
PM Modi drew a direct connection between the expansion of global trade, sustained economic development, and the absolute necessity of secure maritime corridors. This warning is highly relevant as shipping routes in the crucial Persian Gulf face severe disruptions stemming from ongoing conflicts between the United States and Iran. These regional tensions have sent shockwaves through global energy and cargo markets, proving that economic security is fundamentally inseparable from the safety of international transit lanes. By addressing these maritime threats, the Indian Prime Minister highlighted how vital it is for emerging nations to work collectively to shield their supply networks from external geopolitical shocks.
Modi’s Three-Point Action Agenda for Regional Integration
To guide the bloc's future growth, PM Modi presented a clear, action-oriented proposal to the BRICS Business Council, urging them to implement three major initiatives. First, he challenged the council to identify and compile a comprehensive report on the top ten trade barriers that currently restrict business between member states, with the ultimate goal of dismantling these hurdles. Second, he suggested that the coalition should actively support 100 promising startups each year, helping them scale up and establish operations in other member countries. Third, he called for the creation of 1,000 new business partnerships across various industries. Modi proposed that these three specific parameters should be reviewed annually to keep the member nations accountable and focused on tangible outcomes.
Expressing his views on social media, PM Modi noted that the coalition represents 50 percent of humanity and contributes 40 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP), validating its geopolitical importance. At the business forum, the Indian leader reiterated Delhi’s ongoing focus on the values of 'Make in India, Innovate with India, Scale for the World,' stressing that the next decade must be defined by deliberate economic actions and mutual prosperity.
Harnessing Demographic and Economic Might
The geopolitical and macroeconomic footprint of the bloc cannot be overstated. This shifting balance of power was also addressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who took the opportunity to critique Western nations and their use of unilateral economic sanctions, describing such actions as coercive economic pressure. Putin pointed out that over the past five years, the bloc's members have produced over 40 percent of the world's GDP, whereas the Group of Seven (G7) nations contributed a mere 29 percent. This stark comparison underscores the increasing influence of emerging markets in defining the global financial order and challenging historical economic hegemony.
Strengthening the India-Russia Strategic Corridor
Beyond multilateral discussions, the summit also provided a platform to reinforce crucial bilateral relationships. PM Modi highlighted that the economic partnership between India and Russia is experiencing significant momentum. He pointed to their joint participation in the INNOPROM industrial exhibition held in Delhi alongside President Putin, an event that successfully brought together numerous corporations from both countries. According to Modi, this collaborative effort is a clear reflection of the growing depth, trust, and diversification of business engagements between Moscow and New Delhi, spanning critical sectors like technology, manufacturing, and industrial trade.
Deepening India-Iran Diplomatic and Trade Ties
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi held a high-level meeting in Delhi with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian. Their discussions centered on fortifying the long-standing friendship between India and Iran, particularly through a long-term, mutually beneficial strategy. This bilateral engagement is critical given Iran's strategic location and its role in regional transit corridors, such as the International North-South Transport Corridor. Modi stressed that both countries are committed to a win-win partnership that secures energy flows, enhances regional connectivity, and builds resilient trade channels despite the turbulent security environment in West Asia.
Building a Thriving Startup Ecosystem
In developing nations like India, Brazil, and South Africa, tech entrepreneurship is a primary driver of employment and economic transition. Cross-border scaling for startups often fails due to regulatory mismatches and lack of local networks. By establishing a dedicated startup corridor, young companies can bypass traditional entry barriers, allowing an Indian fintech firm or a Brazilian agritech startup to find instant footing in South Africa, Russia, or China. This ecosystem will build deep technological synergy across the Global South. Additionally, systematically removing the top 10 trade barriers will help harmonize customs procedures, reduce regulatory bottlenecks, and pave the way for local currency settlements.
India's Vision for the Global South
The 18th summit marks the fourth time India has assumed the chairship of the BRICS forum. Guided by the central theme of "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability," New Delhi's presidency is focused on consolidating previous achievements while enhancing the institutional efficiency of the group. Under this framework, India is actively championing the developmental, technological, and financial aspirations of the Global South. By advocating for practical solutions and constructive dialogue, India aims to reinforce the group as a stable, solution-oriented platform capable of addressing the pressing global challenges of the modern era.
