The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27) is fast approaching, with July 31 set as the final submission date for individual taxpayers not subject to audit. The Income Tax Department announced on Monday that over 4 crore tax returns have already been successfully submitted. Tax authorities are urging taxpayers across the country to file their returns well ahead of the cutoff date to prevent last-minute server overloads, website slowdowns, and potential technical glitches that frequently occur when traffic peaks near the deadline.
Surge in Filing Volumes and Portal Activity
Earlier metrics released by the Income Tax Department in a social media update on July 11 indicated that 1.7 crore returns had been filed up to July 10. Highlighting the increasing pace of submissions, the department noted that more than 10 lakh returns were logged on July 10 alone. Official communications have repeatedly advised citizens not to delay their filings until the final hours, emphasizing that completing the process early ensures smooth verification and avoids processing delays.
Eligibility Breakdown for ITR-1 and ITR-2 Forms
The July 31 cutoff specifically applies to individual taxpayers submitting income details for FY 2025-26 using forms ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-2. Understanding which form applies is crucial for accurate filing
- ITR-1 (Sahaj): Designed as a simplified option for small and salaried taxpayers, this form is applicable to resident individuals with a total annual income of up to Rs 50 lakh. Eligible income sources include salary or pension, income from a single house property, and agricultural income up to Rs 5,000 per year.
- ITR-2: This form is designated for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who do not have income generated from a business or profession. It applies to those who have earned income through capital gains from investments, multiple house properties, or foreign assets.
Finance Minister Urges Sensitive and Timely Citizen Service
Addressing Income Tax Department officials on Sunday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the need for a proactive and citizen-centric approach in tax administration. The Finance Minister stated that members of the public should not be forced to wander from door to door to get their tax matters resolved. She called upon tax officials to ensure time-bound, sensitive, and fair disposal of taxpayers' grievances and routine filings strictly within the framework of existing regulations.
