Daily life across Punjab is expected to witness noticeable disruptions on Thursday, October 15, following a widespread shutdown call triggered by the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa district. Demonstrators and community groups are taking to the streets to demand swift accountability from the state government and police authorities, seeking decisive legal action against all individuals connected with the fatal incident. The growing public anger has brought sharp attention to the broader issue of illegal narcotics distribution in the region.
Support from SGPC and Status of Key Institutions
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has formally extended its backing to the shutdown, confirming that its administrative offices and affiliated institutions are expected to stay shut on the day of the protest. In contrast, the state administration has not issued any blanket or mandatory notification declaring holidays for schools, colleges, public transport, or retail markets. The practical reach of the protest will vary significantly across different districts, depending heavily on the voluntary involvement of merchant associations, transport unions, and civic bodies.
Tension and Blockades Centered in Mansa District
Mansa district remains the core flashpoint of the unrest, where grief and anger over the killing have brought ordinary routines to an abrupt halt. Demonstrators have staged sit-ins, organised rallies, and established road blockades across multiple routes, creating severe traffic gridlock. The police and local civil administration are maintaining strict surveillance across sensitive junctions, while authorities advise commuters to stay updated on local developments before traveling through the region.
Commercial Outlets, Schools, and Public Transit Outlook
No universal statewide closure has been mandated for educational establishments, meaning that colleges and schools may function normally unless local district authorities or individual institutional managements announce localized leaves. Parents and students must rely directly on verifiable updates from their respective institutions. Commercial markets and retail shops are likely to see partial shutters down only in localities where shopkeeper unions explicitly choose to endorse the shutdown call, as no sweeping closure order exists for commercial hubs.
Public transport networks, including state-operated and private bus fleets, could encounter localized delays or route diversions near major protest focal points and highway blockades. However, complete suspension of transit lines across the state has not been enforced. Essential supply points such as petrol pumps and regular government offices also have no mandatory closure directives for October 15. Because ground dynamics remain fluid as additional groups evaluate their stance, residents are urged to check the latest administrative advisories prior to undertaking long-distance travel.
Confrontation and Subsequent Arrest in Rajasthan
The catalyst for the shutdown trace back to Tuesday, October 13, when a violent altercation erupted between anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota and a chemist in Mansa over suspected illicit pharmaceutical drug sales. During the encounter, gunfire broke out, leading to Jhota sustaining fatal gunshot wounds. Four individuals accompanying Jhota also suffered injuries during the shootout and received medical attention.
Following the deadly confrontation, the accused chemist, identified as Ashwani Kumar, escaped from the scene. Law enforcement launched a manhunt and subsequently apprehended Kumar in the neighbouring state of Rajasthan. The fatal incident has ignited extensive demonstrations, with Jhota's relatives and supporters raising pressing questions regarding the proliferation of illicit substance sales and the alleged failure of local authorities to curb the network. The family officially declared the October 15 bandh to demand comprehensive justice for Jhota and strict punitive action against all parties involved in the fatal confrontation.
