A tragic incident in Nagaland has claimed the lives of 19 individuals across two districts following the suspected consumption of adulterated and illicit alcohol over the past two days. The mounting death toll has triggered an intensive law enforcement response, leading to multiple arrests and a massive seizure of contraband as authorities scramble to trace the source of the lethal brew.
District Toll and Law Enforcement Crackdown
According to police statements released on Saturday, the Mokokchung district accounted for eight fatalities, while the neighboring Tuensang district recorded 11 deaths. In response to the crisis, Nagaland Police have arrested 19 people and confiscated nearly 3,000 bottles of liquor during a series of coordinated raids aimed at dismantling the local supply chain. The sheer volume of the seized bottles highlights the widespread availability of illegal spirits despite strict regulatory measures.
Special Investigation Team and Forensic Analysis
Senior Superintendent of Police Vesupra Kezo stated that a Special Investigation Team headed by Additional Superintendent of Police I Bunglang Chang has been established to investigate the deaths and uncover the origin of the suspected illicit alcohol. Investigators have collected samples of the seized liquor and dispatched them to Guwahati for comprehensive forensic examination to conclusively determine the exact cause of fatalities. While authorities have gathered initial leads through their raids, officials noted that it remains premature to disclose specific findings.

The latest tragedy has reignited intense debate over the efficacy of the total prohibition law that has been in force across Nagaland since 1990. In the wake of the deaths, law enforcement agencies issued a strict public advisory urging citizens to completely avoid consuming any unidentified, unlabelled, or suspicious alcohol report stated. The advisory further cautioned the public against ignoring warning signs such as dizziness, blurred vision, breathing difficulties, or loss of consciousness after drinking, stressing the vital need for immediate medical intervention if such symptoms appear.
