Two men lost their lives on Tuesday in Dimapur, Nagaland, after entering a residential ring well at Oriental Colony to carry out routine maintenance work. The tragedy occurred at a neighbor's premises, where both individuals fell unconscious shortly after climbing inside in what is suspected to be a fatal case of toxic gas poisoning.
SDRF Response and Recovery Efforts
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was alerted to the crisis around noon, prompting the immediate dispatch of a specialized team to initiate rescue measures. SDRF team commander Havildar Yevuxu Swu confirmed that personnel mobilized quickly upon receiving the distress call. The deceased individuals were subsequently identified as 48-year-old Tongpangkumzuk and 26-year-old Panglong.
Rescuers encountered severe physical hurdles during the operation due to the specific structure of the well, which was exceptionally deep and narrow. These cramped dimensions severely restricted movement for emergency personnel working inside the shaft. The retrieval mission was officially concluded at approximately 2 pm, after which the recovered bodies were handed over to their respective families following the completion of statutory police formalities.
Hazardous Depths and Methane Exposure
Initial assessments indicate that lethal exposure to methane gas was the likely cause of death. Elaborating on the atmospheric hazards found in such confined spaces, Havildar Yevuxu Swu noted that oxygen levels inside a ring well drop sharply as depth increases. This rapid depletion of breathable air, combined with accumulating toxic vapors, transforms deep enclosed pits into perilous traps for unprotected workers.
