Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has said that investigators have traced a suspected terror module to Delhi's Jantar Mantar, with alleged links to Pakistan's ISI and Jaish-e-Mohammed. Nine people have been arrested in the case so far.
What Amritsar police found
According to the police, the group had travelled to Jantar Mantar while a protest was underway there. The investigation found that the accused were given local support and essential material during that period. Investigating agencies say alleged handlers also supplied them with some material. However, for reasons still being probed, the group could not carry out its alleged plan, after which all the accused returned to Punjab.
Police uniform plot, West Bengal STF's arrest
In a related development, West Bengal's Special Task Force (STF) arrested a suspect identified as Hamim Mandal, who is said to have links to Jaish-e-Mohammed. The STF claims he was planning to enter the Jantar Mantar protest disguised in a police uniform in order to create disturbance there. Investigating agencies say Shubhendu Adhikari was also among his targets. The STF traced him using information obtained through his girlfriend's Instagram account.
Probe still underway
Police are now trying to establish who helped the group at Jantar Mantar and who else was in contact with them. Agencies are also examining the network's alleged links to Pakistan and the ISI.
