Disastrous floodwaters triggered by heavy rainfall continue to wreak havoc across Assam, bringing severe disruption to daily life. Over the last 24 hours, 6 more fatalities were reported across the state, bringing the total death toll from this natural disaster to 95. Among the recent casualties, Biswanath and Sivasagar districts recorded 2 deaths each, while 1 fatality occurred in Golaghat and another in Morigaon. Currently, over 1.6 lakh citizens across 14 districts remain impacted by the inundation.
Sivasagar Emerges as the Worst Affected District
The disaster has inflicted maximum damage on Sivasagar, where approximately 57,000 individuals are facing critical conditions due to rising water levels. In Golaghat, nearly 34,000 residents have been hit hard, while Jorhat has reported around 25,000 affected citizens. Rapidly expanding floodwaters have submerged residential colonies, local markets, and essential transportation routes, isolating thousands of households from surrounding areas.
Over 44,000 Displaced Citizens Sheltered in Relief Camps
Local administrative teams have initiated widespread emergency relief and rescue operations across flooded regions. More than 100 relief camps and material distribution centers have been made operational state-wide. Currently, over 44,000 displaced people are staying in these designated shelters. Authorities are supplying essential food commodities to victims, ensuring regular distribution of staples including rice, pulses, salt, and mustard oil.
Union Minister JP Nadda Conducts On-Site Inspection
On the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister JP Nadda visited Assam to evaluate the crisis firsthand. Accompanied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Union Minister surveyed the severely impacted areas of Sivasagar district. Expressing grave concern over the extent of destruction, he noted that restoring normalcy in the region would take time, while assuring complete financial and logistical assistance from the central government.
Widespread Crop Destruction and Infrastructure Damage
The torrential currents have dealt a heavy blow to the agrarian economy of the state. Official records confirm that approximately 16,951 hectares of agricultural crops have been completely submerged and destroyed. Physical infrastructure has also suffered severe destruction, with river embankments collapsing in Biswanath and Darrang districts. Additionally, several bridges, roadways, and public structures have been swept away or crippled by violent water currents.
Over 35,000 Animals Impacted as Thousands Are Swept Away
The flood crisis has exerted a tragic toll on livestock and domestic animals alongside human communities. More than 35,000 animals have been affected across the state. Strong water currents have swept away over 8,500 animals, with the largest share of livestock losses reported from Sivasagar district. Farmers and cattle rearers are struggling to transport surviving animals to elevated ground.
Urban Flooding and Rescue Operations by Emergency Teams
Urban regions are similarly grappling with severe waterlogging, which has halted normal civic movement. Major urban centers including Guwahati, Kamrup, and Jorhat are experiencing submerged roads and disrupted basic utilities. At Numaligarh, the Dhansiri River continues to flow above the danger mark, threatening nearby low-lying habitats. In response, NDRF and SDRF personnel are operating motorboats to evacuate stranded residents to safe locations.
