Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated several key infrastructure and operational projects for the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Siliguri, marking a major effort to reinforce border protection and strategic transit infrastructure across North Bengal. Interacting directly with security personnel, Shah inspected border readiness while outlining a comprehensive blueprint for safeguarding national security. He highlighted that protecting the country requires strict vigilance along border regions and criticized previous administrative delays that hindered security infrastructure, contrasting them with recent rapid administrative progress in land distribution for defense purposes.
Siliguri Corridor Security and the Triangular Grid Mechanism
The Siliguri Corridor occupies a vital geopolitical location, linking eight Indian states and sharing physical boundaries with three neighboring nations. To secure this sensitive narrow neck of land, the Union government is establishing a triangular security grid designed to create an impenetrable defensive architecture. Under the overarching 'One Border, One Force' doctrine, the SSB has been entrusted with the challenging assignment of monitoring open and unfenced international borders adjoining Nepal and Bhutan. Shah commended the dedication of SSB troops, acknowledging their disciplined border oversight and their diplomatic conduct when dealing with populations from friendly neighbouring countries.
Alongside defense grid enhancements, comprehensive development initiatives are transforming the surrounding border zones. Border villages are being integrated into national development channels through the Vibrant Villages Program, enhancing local civic resources and economic stability. Simultaneously, major railway stations including Siliguri and Jalpaiguri are undergoing comprehensive modernizations under the Amrit Bharat station scheme, ensuring seamless logistics and modern transit facilities across North Bengal.
Expedited Land Acquisition for Security Battalions
Addressing historical administrative bottlenecks, Shah explained how land allocation delays previously stalled essential defense installations. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had repeatedly withheld necessary land approvals requested by the Border Security Force (BSF), despite direct personal discussions where Shah clarified that the land was strictly required for national defense. The deadlock persisted until a transition in state governance enabled swift action. Following the formation of the new state administration, Suvendu Adhikari secured and transferred 1139 acres of land to security agencies within a span of just 45 days.
This rapid allocation has paved the way for immediate developmental works, including new residential complexes for the 12th and 19th battalions of the BSF in Jalpaiguri. Reaffirming that border defense forces operate beyond political affiliations, Shah emphasized that border fencing remains the most effective deterrent against illegal infiltration. He pointed out that defense organizations like the BSF and SSB serve the nation exclusively, calling for unified public and political support behind their missions.
Delhi to Siliguri High Speed Rail Corridor in Union Budget 2026-27
Parallel to defensive installations, the central government is pushing ahead with transformative transport infrastructure to integrate North Bengal closer to national economic hubs. The Union Budget 2026-27 officially approved seven high-speed rail corridors across the country, featuring the pivotal Delhi to Siliguri route as a flagship project. Expected to reach completion within the next two to three years, the high-speed line will compress the travel time between New Delhi and Siliguri down to merely a few hours.
The strategic implications of this rapid rail network extend beyond civilian travel convenience. Rapid transportation capabilities will enable security forces to deploy equipment and personnel across the region within hours during operational emergencies. This initiative aligns directly with the central government policy of fostering safe, secure, and vibrant land borders through robust mobility and economic integration.
Red Fort Vande Mataram Recitation and Cultural Heritage
Reflecting on broader national milestones during his address, Shah referenced the recent Independence Day celebrations at the historic Red Fort. Marking 80 years of Indian independence, the complete version of Vande Mataram was performed at the Red Fort for the first time in post-independence history. Shah credited Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay for crafting this patriotic anthem, noting that Chattopadhyay had championed cultural nationalism as the foundational spirit for an independent nation.
Highlighting legislative steps taken to honor this legacy, Shah stated: "The Modi government passed a bill in Parliament to make it an integral part of cultural events." He noted that this legislative move ensures the core message of patriotism reaches younger generations effectively. Drawing a parallel to national cultural figures, Shah also remembered legendary musician Ustad Bismillah Khan, who famously derived his deepest peace and spiritual fulfillment while playing the shehnai at the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
