Colonel Anurag Upadhyay once had the option of securing a massive corporate package after scoring in the 99th percentile in the CAT exam. Instead, he chose to wear the uniform of the Indian Army's Special Forces. He served with 3 PARA (SF) and was a vital part of the raising team of 12 PARA (SF). Facing extreme challenges head-on, he even overcame a heart attack back in 2008 and returned to active service with remarkable resilience.

In August 2025, life took a harsh turn when a severe stroke pushed this veteran into a rare condition known as locked-in syndrome. Following subsequent medical complications, doctors had to amputate both his legs below the knees. Today, his entire body is paralyzed, but his mind remains as sharp, alert, and active as it ever was during military operations. He perceives and understands everything happening around him.

Unable to move or speak physically, Colonel Anurag communicates entirely by moving his pupils and utilizing alphabet scanning through his eyelids. Highlighting his plight, fellow officer Colonel Amit Kumar shared an emotional appeal on X. The message clarifies that this is not a plea for pity or sympathy, but an active search for possibilities, medical breakthroughs, and technologies that can unlock a better quality of life for him.
The Search for Specialized Medical and Tech Assistance
To aid his recovery and improve his daily life, the outreach focuses on connecting with specific experts and advanced domains. The requirements include neurologists and neuro-rehabilitation specialists experienced in locked-in syndrome, advanced rehabilitation centers equipped for modern neurological recovery, and technology researchers working on brain-computer interfaces (BCI), eye-tracking, and assistive communication technologies to speed up his interaction abilities.
