Customs officials at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport have foiled a unique gold smuggling attempt involving concealed precious metals in kitchenware. A passenger travelling from Riyadh to Delhi via Mumbai was intercepted with 523 grams of 24-karat gold hidden inside the lids of ordinary cookware.
Interception at Terminal 1 Following Intelligence Profiling
Acting on passenger profiling and suspicious movements, Customs officers stopped the incoming traveler at Terminal 1. When the passenger's check-in baggage underwent mandatory X-ray screening, scanner operators noticed unusual density patterns and suspicious structural shapes within the items inside.
15 Cut Pieces of Pure Gold Recovered from Cookware Lids
A physical inspection of the luggage revealed multiple pieces of cookware. Upon closer examination of the lids, officers discovered that 15 cut pieces of 24-karat gold were intricately embedded along the structural rims and handles. The total net weight of the recovered gold was measured at 523 grams.
Legal Proceedings Initiated Under Customs Regulations
Following the recovery of the contraband, Customs authorities seized the gold and initiated formal legal proceedings against the passenger under applicable provisions of the Customs Act. Investigators are further examining the passenger's travel history and network connections to determine whether the smuggling attempt was linked to an organized syndicate.
