In a significant anti-smuggling operation, the Nagpur unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted a passenger at Nagpur Railway Station and confiscated smuggled gold valued at more than Rs 3.09 crore.
Surveillance On Gyaneshwari Express Following Specific Intelligence
The operation was launched after the Nagpur DRI team received specific confidential intelligence regarding a cross-border smuggling operation. According to the tip-off, gold that had been illegally smuggled into India through the India-Bangladesh border was being transported across the country via the rail network. The intelligence indicated that a suspect carrying the contraband was travelling aboard train 12102 Gyaneshwari Express. Based on these details, DRI officials set up close surveillance at Nagpur Railway Station. As soon as train 12102 arrived at the platform, officers identified the suspected passenger, intercepted him, and took him into custody for searching.
16 Gold Bars Weighing 2 Kg 165 Grams Confiscated
Upon inspecting the passenger's luggage, officers discovered 16 gold bars cleverly concealed within his belongings. A precise measurement revealed that the total weight of the seized gold bars reached 2 kg 165 grams. Based on prevailing international market rates, the estimated valuation of the confiscated gold stands at Rs 3 crore 9 lakh. Preliminary investigations confirmed that the precious metal was smuggled across the India-Bangladesh border without paying customs duties and was scheduled to be delivered to illegal dealers in another part of India.
Investigation On To Uncover Smuggling Network
The detained passenger is currently undergoing rigorous interrogation by DRI investigators aiming to trace the wider syndicate involved in the operation. Authorities are working to map out his contacts, identify the key handlers responsible for pushing the gold across the border, and determine the intended final recipients. Officials confirmed that formal procedures to deposit the seized gold into the government treasury have already been initiated. DRI representatives emphasized that anti-smuggling vigilance along the India-Bangladesh border and major railway corridors will be intensified to dismantle such organized trafficking networks.
