Investigations conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have exposed widespread negligence, pest infestations, and improper storage across luxury five-star hotels, elite sports clubs, and famous restaurants in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. Alongside food adulteration, authorities have also uncovered a racket selling fake cancer injections filled with water, as well as ongoing concerns regarding excessive sugar and poor-quality oil used by multinational food processing brands in India.
Extensive Violations Found at Five-Star Hotels in Aerocity, Delhi
During targeted inspections at two major luxury hotels in Aerocity, Delhi—Andaz and JW Marriott—FSSAI officials documented severe food safety lapses. At Andaz Hotel, inspectors seized 87 kilograms of expired sweets, expired cake bases, and stale bread. The hotel kitchen was infested with cockroaches and flies, with overall cleanliness severely compromised. Officials also noted total non-compliance with mandatory protocols governing the segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items.
At JW Marriott, inspectors recorded 59 distinct operational and hygienic deficiencies. Findings included fruit flies, cockroaches, unwashed utensils, faulty refrigeration units, active water leakages, decayed fruits, and improper label descriptions on stored ingredients. Kitchen staff were observed handling food without hairnets or protective gloves, and one worker was actively preparing food with an open wound. FSSAI issued formal corrective notices to both establishments and dispatched food samples for laboratory evaluation. The findings carry heightened sensitivity as both hotels were slated to host international delegates for the upcoming BRICS summit next month.
Seizures of Spoiled Meat and Unlabeled Stock Across Bengaluru Clubs
In Bengaluru, FSSAI conducted a major enforcement drive inspecting 10 premier elite clubs across the city. At the canteen operating inside the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium Club, inspectors discovered expired fish stocks along with large consignments of pigeon peas (tur dal) lacking mandatory packaging dates or storage disclosures. Kitchen sanitation levels were found to be well below prescribed statutory standards.
The broader Bengaluru operation involved inspections across 60 hotels and the collection of 77 food samples. Enforcement teams confiscated and destroyed approximately 640 kilograms of spoiled meat and 276 kilograms of decayed vegetables. The drive highlighted a stark contrast between the luxury aesthetics of elite venues and the degraded sanitation conditions inside their kitchens.
Food License Suspended at Ayub's Restaurant in Mumbai
On August 22, the Maharashtra FDA inspected the well-known Ayub's Restaurant located in the Fort area of Mumbai. The inspection team recorded critical public health violations, including high-risk items such as eggs stored unchilled at room temperature, widespread fly infestations, and improper food handling. Consequently, the Maharashtra FDA suspended the operating food license of Ayub's Restaurant effective August 23.
