The Telangana government has unveiled a comprehensive ₹58,000 crore master plan to revitalize the Musi River in Hyderabad. Plagued by severe pollution and urban waste for years, the river is set for a complete transformation inspired by the iconic River Thames in London and the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad. The ambitious initiative aims to cleanse the waterbody, create extensive green public spaces, and significantly strengthen the city's civil infrastructure.
55-Kilometer Waterfront to Be Redeveloped in Phases
The grand project encompasses the redevelopment of a 55-kilometer stretch along the Musi River. Initial work will concentrate heavily on a 21-kilometer stretch designated under Phase 1. This primary zone stretches from the historic Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs down to Bapu Ghat. The foundational goal of this phase is to eliminate sewage inflows, clean the riverbed, and convert the surrounding shoreline into an eco-friendly urban corridor.
Modern Sewage Treatment and Advanced Flood Control
Beyond aesthetic beautification, the Musi Riverfront project serves as a strategic overhaul of Hyderabad's civic utilities. Modern Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) alongside extensive new sewer lines will be installed to intercept and treat municipal waste before it reaches the river. Furthermore, engineers will construct robust flood control mechanisms to prevent urban waterlogging during torrential monsoon rains. To enhance public health, the riverbanks will feature paved walking paths, dedicated cycling tracks, lush green belts, and open-air public plazas.
Bapu Ghat to Host Cultural Hub and 'Gandhi Sarovar'
Bapu Ghat will function as the focal landmark of the entire riverfront initiative. The site will house 'Gandhi Sarovar', a world-class cultural and experiential complex. Key highlights within Gandhi Sarovar include a Statue of Peace honoring Mahatma Gandhi, a state-of-the-art museum, a wellness village, and a dedicated handloom center designed to promote Telangana's traditional arts and crafts.
Boost to Connectivity, Tourism, and Local Real Estate
To relieve traffic congestion across the metropolitan area, the plan proposes a major connectivity corridor extending from Narsingi to Gourelli. Once completed, the Musi Riverfront Development will redefine tourism, urban mobility, and environmental sustainability in Hyderabad. Additionally, the massive infrastructure upgrade is expected to stimulate long-term economic growth, driving real estate values and commercial activities along the river corridor.
