India is fully prepared to celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15 with historic fervor and national pride. On this milestone occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort in New Delhi for the 13th consecutive time. Building upon celebrations of previous years, the ceremony brings several historic firsts to the national stage. Chief among these is the first-ever live mass rendition of the national song 'Vande Mataram' during the official Red Fort ceremony. With patriotic enthusiasm sweeping across the country, a multi-layered security grid has been activated around the Red Fort. Centered on the dual themes of 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) and 'Yuva Shakti' (Youth Power), Prime Minister Modi is expected to outline a new national vision and unveil major development initiatives.
Historic Commemoration of 150 Years of Vande Mataram
This year's Independence Day celebrations feature a deeply significant historical milestone that honours India's cultural heritage. For the first time in the history of the Red Fort celebrations, the national song 'Vande Mataram' will be performed live during the official proceedings. This special rendition marks a tribute to the 150-year legacy of the song and its enduring role in shaping the nation's freedom movement. Expressing the solemnity of the occasion, the Ministry of Defence stated in an official release, "This event is fully dedicated to the historical legacy of Vande Mataram and the youth power of the country."
According to the official schedule, immediately after the unfurling of the national flag, an Indian Army band will play the solemn tune of 'Vande Mataram'. As the melody resounds across the grounds, all attendees will join together in singing the national song, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. To witness this historic moment, 5,000 special guests representing diverse sections of society including agriculture, education, science, sports, and grassroots community leadership have been invited to represent the collective spirit of the nation.
PM Modi's 13th Consecutive Address and Historic Records
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unfurled the national flag at the Red Fort every year since assuming office in 2014. His upcoming speech on August 15 marks his 13th unbroken annual address. With this milestone, he has already surpassed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who delivered 11 consecutive speeches from the Red Fort. Currently, Prime Minister Modi ranks second only to India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who holds the record of 17 consecutive addresses delivered between 1947 and 1963.
Prime Minister Modi's addresses have also been noteworthy for their duration and comprehensive focus. In 2025, he delivered a 103-minute address, setting a new record for the longest Independence Day speech by any Prime Minister in Indian history. As the nation prepares for the 80th Independence Day, citizens and industry leaders anticipate key announcements regarding large-scale infrastructure projects, technological advancements, and socio-economic policies aimed at driving national growth.
Flag Hoisting, 21-Gun Salute, and Air Force Flypast
Upon his arrival at the Red Fort on the morning of August 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The Defence Minister will escort him to the saluting base, where a joint contingent comprising the three wings of the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force) alongside the Delhi Police will present a formal national salute. The Indian Army has been entrusted with the primary responsibility of coordinating the entire ceremonial event.
The moment the Prime Minister unfurls the National Flag, a ceremonial 21-gun salute will resound across the venue, executed using indigenous 105 mm Light Field Guns. Captain Sonia Singh Chauhan will assist the Prime Minister during the flag unfurling process. As the tricolour ascends, military personnel will render the formal National Salute. Simultaneously, two Mi-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force will perform a flypast, showering flower petals over the gathering. One helicopter will carry the National Flag, while the other will display the words 'Vande Mataram'. The helicopter operations will be commanded by Wing Commander Rajat and Squadron Leader Ankit Varshney.
Tri-Services Guard of Honour and Multi-Layered Security
Following the Prime Minister's address, NCC cadets and volunteers from the 'Mera Bharat' initiative will lead a collective singing of 'Vande Mataram', bringing the ceremonial events at the Red Fort to a grand conclusion. Synchronized celebrations and flag-hoisting ceremonies will also take place across all states and union territories.
Security measures in and around the capital have been fortified to ensure an impenetrable perimeter. Delhi Police, alongside central security agencies, remain on high alert. The Guard of Honour contingent for the Prime Minister will comprise 1 officer and 24 personnel drawn from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Delhi Police. Overall command of the Guard of Honour will be held by Lieutenant Colonel Arjun Singh. The Army contingent will be led by Major Aditya Sharma, the Navy by Lieutenant Commander Neelam Rana, the Air Force by Squadron Leader Vipin Kumar, and the Delhi Police contingent by ADCP Vineet Kumar.
