A massive natural calamity originating from Tibet has wreaked havoc in Nepal, plunging multiple families in Bihar into deep distress and claiming the lives of several people from the region. Focusing on West Champaran district, around seven individuals had migrated to Nepal in search of daily wage work, out of which three remain untraced. The administration and rescue teams successfully evacuated four survivors and brought them safely back to their homes in the Chanpatia and Ramnagar blocks.
The Journey to Nepal for Livelihood
Neyaz Mian, a resident of ward number 01 at Turhapatti Tola in Chanpatia, shared that roughly six people from his village had traveled to Nepal to work in districts including Rasuwa. Among them were his elder brother Arman Mian, along with neighbors Mukhtar Ansari and Sameer Ansari, who had departed for Nepal just fifteen days prior. Notably, Arman had also brought along his elder son Salman and Salman's friend Jabbarul Alam to work alongside them.
A Severe Migraine That Saved a Life
Neyaz, Arman, Salman, and Jabbarul were staying in the Dhunche area of Nepal's Rasuwa district, while the other workers resided elsewhere. On the fateful morning of Wednesday, August 26, Salman's father was getting ready to leave for work as usual. He asked his son Salman and his friend to accompany him, but Salman declined because he was suffering from a severe headache. To ensure Salman was not left alone, the father asked Jabbarul to stay back at the quarters to look after him.
The 100-Foot Deluge and Escape
According to Salman, roughly one to two hours after his father left for work, a deafening roar echoed from outside, terrifying everyone in the vicinity. Upon rushing outside to check, they witnessed a massive wall of water standing nearly 100 feet tall, swallowing everything in its path. Confronted with this apocalyptic scene, the two youths fled in whatever state they were in, scrambling to reach a higher vantage point nearby. Shortly after, Salman's uncle Neyaz and several others arrived at the scene to assess the situation.
Rescue Operations and Safe Return
Once the floodwaters receded and conditions somewhat stabilized, everyone began searching for Salman's father and the other missing companions, but no information regarding their whereabouts could be found. A rescue team arrived at the spot, comforted the survivors, and airlifted them to the Dhunche Army camp. After providing food and water, they were shifted to the Unwa Kot Army camp in Trishuli, from where private vehicles transported them via Kathmandu to Birgunj and Raxaul, culminating in a train journey back to Bettiah.
