Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has expressed deep frustration over the current state of highway and expressway construction projects across the country. Reacting sharply to widespread delays and substandard quality, he issued a direct warning that he intends to set a record for blacklisting contractors and suspending officials responsible for such failures. Speaking at a public event, he remarked that the prolonged delays in road infrastructure projects have become a source of personal embarrassment, making it clear that such sluggishness will no longer be tolerated under any circumstances.
Quality Issues Plague Major Expressways
This anger is driven by a series of high-profile quality failures and missed deadlines that have put the entire execution system under intense scrutiny. Whether it is the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway which ran into trouble just two months after its opening, or the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Delhi-Delhi-Dehradun Expressway which have faced massive delays over a five-year period, quality concerns have been a common thread. The situation on the Lucknow-Kanpur route deteriorated so severely that toll collection had to be suspended within a week of its inauguration. The National Highways Authority of India barred the constructing company from collecting tolls, drawing nationwide criticism. Similarly, the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Dehradun expressways have faced heavy criticism, while slow-moving projects across Maharashtra and Goa have pushed Nitin Gadkari's patience to its limit.
Personal Inspection Planned for Mumbai-Goa Highway
Reflecting on the sluggish widening of the Mumbai-Goa highway, Gadkari shared that while he previously felt too ashamed to attend its inauguration due to massive delays, he has now decided to take matters into his own hands. In October, he will personally travel by road from the Mumbai airport to Goa to inspect the entire highway firsthand. Speaking during the inauguration of a six-lane elevated road corridor at Porvorim near Panaji, he reiterated his zero-tolerance policy toward infrastructural delays. He stated that he wants to create a record of taking action against those accountable for poor execution by blacklisting contractors and suspending defaulting officials.
A Crackdown on Negligent Contractors and Officials
The road transport minister emphasized that strict measures against those accountable for delays and poor implementation will continue without any leniency. He announced his intention to establish a record over the next year by blacklisting the maximum number of defiant contractors and penalizing them decisively. His sights are equally fixed on irresponsible government officers, and he made it clear that he wants to set a record for suspending them as well, vowing not to back down from this mission. Those found at fault must prepare to face the consequences of their actions.
Transforming the Mumbai-Goa Highway With Modern Amenities
Beyond punitive measures, Gadkari urged the Goa government to develop amenities along the Mumbai-Goa highway that showcase the state's traditional architecture, local cuisine, and rich handicraft heritage. He also advocated for setting up facilities supporting biofuels, electric vehicles, and alternative green fuels alongside conventional petrol and diesel stations. Emphasizing the need for scientific plantation along highways, he suggested conducting studies to identify plant species capable of absorbing higher amounts of carbon dioxide. Advocating for a greater shift toward electric, hydrogen, and flex-fuel technologies, he noted these innovations will play a vital role in reducing overall pollution levels.
