Two alarming incidents highlighting road safety concerns and public infrastructure neglect unfolded across Odisha. In the capital city of Bhubaneswar, an allegedly intoxicated driver rammed a high-speed SUV straight into a residential building late Wednesday night. Hours later on Thursday morning, two primary school students sustained injuries in Koraput district when a rusted iron entrance gate collapsed onto them while entering their campus.
Speeding SUV Crashes Into Nayapalli Residence in Bhubaneswar
The first incident occurred late Wednesday night in the Nayapalli locality of Bhubaneswar, near Biju Patnaik College. According to eyewitnesses at the scene, a Mahindra Scorpio was being driven at an excessively high speed when the motorist suddenly lost control of the vehicle. The SUV veered off the road and plowed into a roadside house. The impact produced a loud crashing sound that triggered panic and brought neighboring residents out into the street.
The severe collision destroyed two scooters parked directly outside the house, both of which belonged to the occupants of the residence. Promptly alerted to the scene, local police personnel arrived to manage the chaos and took the driver into custody for questioning. Preliminary investigations by law enforcement point toward alleged drunk driving as the primary cause behind the sudden loss of vehicle control.
Vehicle Seized Following Extraction; Police Investigation Ongoing
Due to the force of the collision, the SUV became firmly wedged inside the structure of the house. Police officers coordinated efforts to extract the damaged vehicle safely before formally impounding it. Authorities confirmed that there has been no official confirmation of any injuries or fatalities resulting from the house crash. Officers are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances and underlying causes that led to the crash.
Rusted Entrance Gate Collapses on Students at Koraput School
In a separate incident on Thursday morning, structural negligence led to an accident at Kaladi Project Upper Primary School, located under the Kasandi Panchayat in the Nandapur Block of Koraput district. As children were arriving for their morning classes and passing through the main entrance, a dilapidated, rusted iron gate suddenly gave way, pulling down a portion of the adjacent cement boundary wall with it.
The collapsing structure struck two young students who were stepping through the gateway. The injured children have been identified as seven-year-old Deepak Majhi and eight-year-old Kamesh Khil. Both pupils were caught beneath the falling debris as the gate collapsed without warning.
Rescue Operations and Medical Status of the Injured Children
Reacting swiftly to the crash, nearby villagers and members of the school administration rushed to the scene and pulled both children out from under the rubble. The injured students were immediately transported to the Nandapur Community Health Centre for emergency medical attention. Medical staff at the health center administered primary treatment and subsequently confirmed that both Deepak Majhi and Kamesh Khil are in stable condition and out of danger.
