A Life Dedicated to Absolute Simplicity and Sacrifice
Dr. Lahiri's life has long stood as a powerful testament to absolute selflessness. Since 1997, he refused to draw his salary from BHU for personal use, choosing instead to channel every penny of his earnings toward patient welfare and medical support. Even after his official retirement, his commitment never wavered as he continued offering free consultations and treatments at the outpatient department. His pension funds were similarly redirected entirely toward helping those in need.
Walking Commute and Humble Living
Demonstrating remarkable austerity, Dr. Lahiri resided in a very modest home until just a few months ago, located about two kilometers away from the BHU hospital. Regardless of scorching heat, pouring rain, or biting cold, he routinely walked the distance between his home and the medical facility. Owning no car, the sight of him walking down the street holding an umbrella was familiar and deeply respected by everyone in the vicinity.
Educational Background and Career Journey
Born on January 3, 1941, in Kolkata, Dr. Lahiri pursued rigorous medical training abroad. He earned his FRCS in cardiac surgery from England in 1969 and completed his M.Ch in 1972. Returning to India, he dedicated his entire existence to serving patients at the campus. Over the years, he served in various academic and administrative capacities at BHU, including reader, assistant professor, professor, and head of the department, maintaining patient care as his ultimate lifelong goal.
Surrendering a Six-Figure Salary
Reports indicate that back in 1994, his monthly salary exceeded 100,000 rupees. Despite earning a substantial amount, he never acquired luxury cars or grand mansions, keeping only enough to cover his daily meals while donating the rest to medical causes. Acknowledging his profound contributions, leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi आदित्यनाथ have publicly praised his noble path.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to medicine, the government honored him with the Padma Shri in 2016.
