The 25-day student protest in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, has come to a formal end after the state government acceded to the primary demands raised by the agitating candidates. Demonstrating candidates, who had been gathered at the Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium since July 25, marked their victory by organizing a large celebratory procession termed the 'Aabhaar Yatra'. Prominent student leader Devendra Nath Mahato, who was at the forefront of the agitation, officially concluded his 16-day hunger strike. Following the termination of the fast, supporters smeared Mahato with traditional colored powder (abir) and celebrated the successful outcome of their movement.
Celebratory March From Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium to Albert Ekka Chowk
The student movement commenced on July 25 at the Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi, sparked by widespread grievances regarding recruitment examination paper leaks and procedural irregularities. The turning point occurred two days prior when the Jharkhand government conceded to a crucial demand by deciding to cancel the JSSC-CGL examination. In response to the decision, the students chose to transform their agitation into an expression of thanksgiving, organizing a march across the city.
The celebratory rally originated at the Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium and traversed key city routes before terminating at Albert Ekka Chowk in Ranchi. Hundreds of students participated in the march, carrying placards and national flags. As Devendra Nath Mahato ended his 16-day hunger strike, gathered supporters welcomed him with enthusiastic cheers. With colorful abir on his hair, Mahato joined the crowd in celebrating the resolution, attributing the victory to the sustained unity of state job aspirants.
Strong Warning Against Recruitment Irregularities and Paper Leaks
Addressing the gathered crowd after concluding his fast, student leader Devendra Nath Mahato reiterated a firm stance against malpractices in competitive state examinations. He emphasized that systemic corruption, lobbying, and procedural lapses in public recruitment would no longer be tolerated within the state of Jharkhand, demanding complete transparency for job seekers.
Invoking the historical legacy of the region, Mahato referenced legendary freedom figures including Birsa Munda, Phulo-Jhano, and Chand-Bhairav to underline the spirit of public struggle in Jharkhand. He declared, "We will completely eradicate the education mafia from its roots." He asserted that any attempt to undermine fair competition through unfair means would face decisive public opposition.
Two-Month Deadline Issued to the State Government
While the sit-in demonstration at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium has concluded, student representatives clarified that their struggle for systemic reform remains ongoing. They noted that the onus now rests on the state administration to fulfill all agreed terms and implement long-term recruitment safeguards.
The student leadership has officially given the Jharkhand government a two-month timeframe to execute concrete administrative measures regarding their demands. They cautioned that if satisfactory actions are not taken within these two months, candidates will resume their agitation on the streets. Although the nearly month-long sit-in has drawn to a close, the upcoming two months present a critical test for the state governance.
