Continuous heavy rainfall in the upstream mountain regions has triggered a destructive surge in the Sharda River, leading to massive land erosion across the plains of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh. The rapidly rising water level and swift currents are rapidly carving away the riverbanks, causing severe distress among local residents. The crisis is particularly critical in Rura Sultanpur village, located within Gola tehsil, where the relentless force of the river is swallowing large tracts of fertile agricultural land and standing crops every single day.
Severe Riverbank Erosion Near Veer Baba Sthan in Gola Tehsil
A total of five tehsils in Lakhimpur Kheri district fall under flood-prone zones. Currently, the Sharda River is causing maximum destruction on the northern side of Rura Sultanpur village, specifically near the revered Veer Baba Sthan. The intense water flow is eroding farmland at an alarming pace, with large chunks of soil collapsing directly into the surging river. For local farming families, this disaster represents far more than the loss of physical property; it directly threatens their primary source of livelihood and long-term food security.
Widespread Destruction of Sugarcane and Paddy Crops
The aggressive erosion has decimated extensive agricultural fields where local farmers cultivate staple and commercial crops. Paddy and sugarcane crops, which require months of hard work and investment, are disappearing into the river within hours. Large trees along the riverbank are also collapsing under the force of the water. Farmers express deep concern that if the erosion continues at this relentless pace, hundreds of acres of arable land will be wiped off the map, leaving the community without any agricultural foundation.
Ground Reality: On-the-Ground Accounts from Affected Farmers
Speaking about the crisis, Neeraj, a local farmer from Rura Sultanpur, shared the grim reality of the situation. He reported that heavy erosion has been taking place continuously near Veer Baba Sthan for the past week. The speed of destruction is so rapid that within just half an hour, approximately 2 to 3 bighas of farmland collapse into the Sharda River. Neeraj warned that if the erosion is not halted immediately, the entire village of Rura Sultanpur faces the threat of being completely erased in the coming days. Meanwhile, administrative authorities are urging residents to evacuate vulnerable low-lying areas and move to higher ground.
Farmers Lose Lifelong Savings as Acres of Crops Sink
Another affected farmer, Jagdish, described the catastrophic loss of his agricultural land. Jagdish had cultivated sugarcane across 7 acres of land. Due to the unstoppable riverbank erosion, almost his entire farm has been swallowed by the river, leaving only 1 bigha of sugarcane crop standing. He added that even massive trees along the riverbank have collapsed into the water, highlighting the terrifying scale of the river's force. With their fields destroyed and their future uncertain, the villagers are left struggling to cope with the immense financial and emotional toll of the disaster.
