An aggressive weather system originating from the Arabian Sea has unleashed widespread disruptions across the western and southern coastlines of the country. Persistent downpours have transformed prominent roads into rivers and left residential neighborhoods submerged. Ranging from Ahmedabad and Vadodara in Gujarat to Mumbai and Goa, continuous torrential rain has crippled daily routines, forcing authorities to restrict entry at religious sites and grapple with severe urban flooding.
Severe Waterlogging Paralyzes Gujarat Cities
Following heavy rainfall on Monday, several wards in eastern Ahmedabad including Bhaipura, Hatkeshwar, and Khokra experienced extreme waterlogging. The accumulation of rainwater severely disrupted vehicular movement and caused immense hardship for daily commuters. The premises of Udaygum Archana High School located in the Bhaipura-Hatkeshwar ward were also inundated. Reports of waterlogging emerged from multiple locations stretching from the 132-foot ring road in Hatkeshwar up to Guruji Bridge, while low-lying residential societies near the Kharikat canal faced similar flooding.
Residential pockets including Dheeraj Housing, Ravel, Rajesh Park, and the areas behind Bhimanso Park witnessed rising water levels that worsened residents' woes. Traffic leading toward the express highway slowed to a crawl as motorists waded through flooded stretches. Additionally, floodwaters entered the stepwell premises of the Khodiyar Temple near Hatkeshwar Circle, prompting officials to suspend public visits for safety reasons. The recurring inundation has triggered serious questions regarding the city's stormwater drainage infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Mumbai and its adjoining metropolitan regions bore the brunt of relentless showers. The continuous downpour since the night of September 12 led to significant waterlogging on the eastern side of the Nalasopara railway station, compelling travelers to wade through submerged pathways. Precipitation remained unabated across the Vasai-Virar urban belt, flooding thoroughfares such as Center Park and the Tulinj Bridge in Nalasopara.
Morning commuters faced severe obstacles while navigating flooded streets in Dadar, while water accumulation over railway tracks at Kurla station disrupted train operations. In response to the intensifying weather conditions, meteorological authorities issued a yellow alert for the region.
Lightning Strikes Claim Two Lives In Andhra Pradesh
Weather conditions deteriorated sharply in Andhra Pradesh as a low-pressure system triggered heavy downpours across multiple districts. In Palnadu district, two women lost their lives due to lightning strikes during a severe thunderstorm that battered Narasaraopet. Fatalities were reported from the villages of Petlurivaripalem and Laxmipuram, where the victims were identified as Nagamma (63) and Mekala Venkayamma (60). Officials indicated that both individuals likely suffered cardiac arrests during the incident.
Heavy rainfall also battered East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, and Gajuwaka localities. Commuters faced acute inconvenience at the Nidadavolu bus stand after rainwater flooded the premises. According to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, a low-pressure area persists over the Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh regions, with forecasts indicating movement toward the west-northwest direction and bringing moderate to heavy showers across parts of the state.
