Commuters in Delhi often spend hours crawling through traffic to cover just a few kilometres, and the city government is now moving to ease that burden with two new elevated corridors planned for north and north-east Delhi.
Where the two corridors will run
The first corridor will connect Britannia Chowk to the Outer Ring Road, while the second will stretch from Ankur Enclave to the Gokulpuri Metro Station. Both are designed to function as bypass arterial routes, giving vehicles an alternative path instead of funnelling more traffic onto already congested roads. The corridors are expected to ease congestion on some of Delhi's worst choke points, including the Outer Ring Road, Peeragarhi, Rohtak Road and Wazirabad Road, stretches that see thousands of vehicles jam up every single day. The north Delhi corridor will pass through the Shakur Basti railway station and Guru Harkishan Road, while the second corridor will be built directly over the Karawal Nagar drain, using the existing drain alignment so that fresh land acquisition is minimised.
Bids invited for DPR, five month target
The Public Works Department, or PWD, has recently invited bids to prepare the detailed project reports, or DPRs, for both corridors. Each corridor will be about five kilometres long. The department estimates the work will cost around Rs 3.21 crore and take roughly five months to complete. The actual construction cost, timeline and design will only become clear once the DPRs are ready.
Relief expected on congested Rohtak Road
PWD officials say the proposed flyover on Guru Harkishan Marg will reduce the load on this stretch and create a parallel route for traffic. An official said that during peak hours, congestion on Rohtak Road becomes so severe that travelling past Peeragarhi Chowk towards the Mundka industrial area and Bahadurgarh becomes difficult. This road connects to the Outer Ring Road near Britannia Chowk on one end and to the Mangolpuri flyover on the other, making it a critical link whose jams ripple across the wider area.
Better connectivity for Karawal Nagar residents
The second corridor, built over the Karawal Nagar drain, is expected to directly benefit residents of Karawal Nagar, Shiv Vihar, Johripur and Dayalpur. Karawal Nagar resident Harish Bisht said the area's two main arterial routes, from Bhajanpura to Dayalpur and from Khajuri to Pavi Cinema Karawal Nagar via Pushta Road, see the heaviest congestion. He said these two routes also account for the highest number of traffic violations in Delhi. According to him, until the corridor is ready, a stronger police presence is needed in these areas to keep traffic under control and give daily commuters some relief.
