Urban transit in Maharashtra's prominent industrial and information technology hub received a major expansion as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Pune Metro Line 3 and initiated Phase II projects valued at Rs 21,800 crore. The infrastructure drive is planned to accelerate local mobility, reduce heavy surface traffic, and modernize connectivity across densely populated employment and residential zones.
Pink Line Connects Hinjawadi with Shivajinagar
Line 3, also designated as the Pink Line, provides a high-capacity link between the major software campus at Hinjawadi and the central junction of Shivajinagar. For thousands of daily commuters travelling to Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, this dedicated route offers a direct alternative to congested roadways, cutting travel hours and improving last-mile transit efficiency across key corporate sectors.
Phase II Corridors and Cabinet Approvals
Alongside the operational launch, the massive Rs 21,800 crore Phase II expansion is set to transform travel between the eastern and western peripheries of the city. The Union Cabinet previously cleared Line 4 connecting Kharadi to Khadakwasla as well as Line 4A covering Nal Stop to Warje and Manik Baug. Additional approvals also advance extensions along Line 2 beyond Vanaz, creating an integrated transit grid designed to balance rapid commercial expansion with sustainable mass transit.
Statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Highlighting the impact of the newly launched infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in a post on X that a better connected Pune is a faster growing Pune. He noted that the new metro projects will boost the city's economic growth while enhancing the overall ease of living for residents across the urban area.
Public Reaction
Citizens shared varied perspectives in response to the development. While many commuters welcomed the improved urban transit corridors and requested strict enforcement of commuter rules, others highlighted past timeline delays and urged authorities to address lingering civic issues such as road repairs and electricity disruptions.
