Bhubaneswar: The protest led by teacher aspirants demanding immediate recruitment for vacant teaching positions in government-run schools across Odisha has intensified significantly. Marking the sixth consecutive day of the agitation, hundreds of young teacher candidates gathered at Lower PMG to press for their demands. With negotiations with the state government yielding no concrete resolution, the protesters have now taken the extreme step of initiating a hunger strike.
Core Demands and the Role of the Association
The primary objective of the protesting candidates is to compel authorities to commence recruitment processes for the numerous empty seats in government educational institutions. The candidates allege that despite the administration being fully aware of their plight, authorities are failing to show any genuine seriousness toward filling these vacancies. Operating under the banner of the All Odisha Teachers Aspirants Association, these candidates have been staging a sit-in at Lower PMG since August 17.
The association's core demands encompass not only regular primary and high school vacancies within the state system but also positions for special educators and vacancies in Odisha Model Schools. The protestors are persistently demanding the prompt release of recruitment notifications across all these categories to address the acute shortage of educators in public schools.
Placards, Banners, and Failed Ministerial Talks
Throughout the demonstration, participants were seen carrying placards, banners, and posters featuring sharp slogans. Prominent among them were messages reading, “Give appointments, not promises. We are not begging, we are demanding our rights.” The aspirants argue that they have successfully acquired the necessary educational credentials and training required for teaching roles, and therefore rightfully deserve the opportunity to participate in official recruitment drives.
On the preceding Friday, a five-member delegation representing the protesting candidates held discussions with School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond. The aspirants placed their grievances directly before the government and pressed for an immediate rollout of hiring procedures. However, despite the engagement, the meeting concluded without producing any viable solution.
Government Stance and Allegations From Protesters
According to the accounts shared by the demonstrators, the government conveyed that approximately 26,000 jobs were already in the process of being filled and no further recruitment announcements would be made at this juncture. One participant alleged that authorities further remarked that jobs would be allocated when the appropriate time arrived, adding that aspirants could not force the government into immediate hiring.
The candidates contend that while the administration understands their predicament, it lacks the earnestness required to resolve the issue. Furthermore, the protesters claimed that during the ministerial interaction, questions were raised regarding their fundamental capabilities as teachers, which further fueled widespread anger among the group. With discussions collapsing, the candidates resolved to escalate their campaign.
Hunger Strike, Candlelight March, and Continued Resolve
Fulfilling their threat of escalation, the association commenced a formal hunger strike. The participants declared that their agitation would persist unabated until the government delivered a definitive and favorable decision concerning their demands. The demonstrators also announced that they would continue their sit-in protest at Lower PMG for an indefinite period.
In addition to the hunger strike, the aspirants organized a peaceful candlelight procession during the demonstration. Holding lit candles in one hand and the national flag in the other, the candidates registered a peaceful protest against government policies while collectively reciting the national anthem. The dual display of candles and the tricolor symbolized their commitment to a peaceful agitation.
The association has reiterated its call for the government to clarify the exact status of vacant teaching positions and promptly issue recruitment notifications to kickstart selection procedures. As the protests continue at Lower PMG, all eyes remain focused on how the state administration will respond to the escalating demands of the aspirants.
Earlier, administrative approvals had been granted in other sectors, including when Odisha approved 755 new posts in government medical colleges.
