The BJP government in Rajasthan, led by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, is currently navigating a period of intense scrutiny and mounting criticism. The administration finds itself beleaguered by a sequence of incidents that have raised severe questions regarding governance and public service delivery. The alarming rise in maternal deaths reported across districts like Kota, Bikaner, Jodhpur, and more recently in Bhilwara and Banswara, has placed the state's medical infrastructure under the spotlight. Simultaneously, the government is facing intense pressure over the death of a young student named Amayra at the Neerja Modi School in Jaipur, and a major scandal involving the awarding of a 20-crore rupee mining contract to the father of Suresh Dhaka, a wanted kingpin in multiple paper leak cases. These developments have provided the opposition Congress party with significant ammunition to attack the administration, leaving the public increasingly distressed and questioning if this is a systemic failure or gross negligence.
The Initial Half-Term Strategy
The Bhajanlal Sharma government has reached the halfway mark of its tenure. During its initial phase, the administration functioned with significant momentum. The BJP came to power largely by sidelining Congress on issues concerning paper leak rackets and crimes against women, particularly rape cases. In the early stages, the government acted decisively against these issues. Immediately after taking office, they established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe paper leak cases and launched aggressive operations against the mafia involved. A statewide campaign was initiated to remove encroachments, often utilizing bulldozers against offenders, which initially helped build a strong public image.
Infrastructure and Development Claims
Before these recent controversies, the administration achieved notable progress on long-delayed infrastructure projects. They finalized the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) by negotiating with the central and Madhya Pradesh governments, rebranding it as the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (PKC-ERCP) and signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU). This initiative, dubbed the 'Ram Jal Setu Link Project,' was seen as a major milestone. Additionally, after years of deadlock, the government successfully signed an MoU with the Haryana government to resolve the long-pending 'Yamuna Water Agreement,' aimed at supplying water to the Shekhawati region. Despite these milestones, the political climate has shifted drastically over the last month and a half, with the government now struggling to contain a series of crises.
The Maternal Mortality Crisis
The most damaging issue currently facing the administration is the death of mothers in state-run medical facilities. What began in the coaching hub of Kota spread to Bikaner and Jodhpur, and ultimately reached Bhilwara and Banswara. The situation has become a major embarrassment for the government. The public response was further inflamed by comments from Medical Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar, who stated regarding the deaths that he was "not sure how these deaths are happening." This lack of accountability has shifted the focus toward the quality of medications and injections provided in state hospitals, casting doubt on the entire procurement system.
Paper Leak Mafia Ties
The government's credibility took a massive hit when it was revealed that the father of Suresh Dhaka—a wanted mafia figure with a bounty of 5 lakh rupees on his head for his involvement in over 10 recruitment exam paper leaks including those for teachers and SI—had been awarded a 20-crore rupee mining contract in Beawar. This revelation turned the political heat into a full-blown crisis. Although Minister of State for Home Jawahar Singh Bedham promised an investigation, the government faced internal dissent when Cabinet Minister Kirodi Lal Meena publicly questioned the move, further embarrassing the administration.
Political Siege and Mounting Social Issues
Opposition parties, primarily the Congress, have maintained a relentless siege on the government over the delays in panchayat elections. Using the 'OBC Commission' report as a hurdle, the government has been criticized for avoiding the electoral process. Former MLA Sanyam Lodha has even threatened to move the Supreme Court over contempt of court issues related to these delays. Furthermore, the state is grappling with the aftermath of the NEET paper leak, which triggered a wave of student suicides. Rahul Gandhi visited Kota to lend support to the students, turning the issue into a sustained campaign against the BJP state government. With investigations into the deaths of Amayra and Vanshika also drawing public ire and raising questions about police efficiency, the Bhajanlal Sharma administration remains trapped in a defensive cycle.
