A fresh political controversy erupted following Chief Justice of India Surya Kant's remarks regarding demonstrations and administrative restrictions in Delhi. The Kerala unit of the Congress party targeted the Chief Justice directly on social media, suggesting he step down from his position. This led to an immediate surge of reactions across online platforms, bringing questions about the judiciary, law enforcement responsibilities, and constitutional institutions to the forefront of political debate.
The Kerala Congress Post and Subsequent Deletion
The Kerala chapter of the Congress party posted on X stating that if managing law and order is beyond capability, an immediate resignation should follow to bring in someone competent to handle the responsibility. Although the post was subsequently deleted, it drew a massive wave of comments and reactions from various users across the platform before it was taken down.
Sharp Reactions From Online Users
The political post invited significant backlash from internet users. A user named Jayaprasad remarked that after targeting the Chief Election Commissioner, the party had now shifted its attacks to the Chief Justice. Another individual criticized the party by stating that finding a new Chief Justice is not within their domain. Additionally, a user handle named Raisina HQ asserted that the party was digging its own political grave through such statements.
What the Chief Justice Stated
The controversy stems from the stance taken by Chief Justice Surya Kant regarding the ongoing political agitation in the capital and the strict administrative curbs imposed across Delhi. On the sidelines of the 33rd Foundation Day celebrations of the National Human Rights Commission held at Vigyan Bhavan, when journalists sought his view on the prevailing situation in Delhi, he explicitly stated that this is not his issue. He clarified that protests on streets and security-related restrictions fall entirely under the domain of law and order, and the judiciary has no direct involvement in them.
Heavy Security Lockdown and Detentions in Delhi
Over the past few days, intense protests have been witnessed in Delhi against the Chief Election Commissioner. The capital was effectively turned into a fortress during the weekend, marked by heavy deployment of security forces, the closure of 45 metro stations on October 10, and stringent barricading at city borders. Thousands of demonstrators, including top leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party and former Chief ministers, were taken into custody during these developments. Amidst the political uproar and restrictions on public movement on the streets, the Chief Justice made it clear that commenting on this administrative matter is not part of his responsibilities.
