Intense political friction marked the recent monsoon session of the Delhi assembly as legislators engaged in a heated debate over women welfare policies, particularly the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana. While the floor was occupied with discussions surrounding the framework and future impact of this major welfare initiative, opposition members raised multiple queries regarding its implementation. However, when the time arrived to deliver detailed policy and technical responses to those points, lawmakers belonging to the Aam Aadmi Party staged a walkout. Following this abrupt departure, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched a sharp critique against the opposition, denouncing their exit as proof of narrow political posturing and a complete unwillingness to listen to matters concerning female empowerment.
Contrasting Priorities Inside the House
Addressing the assembly, the Chief Minister pointed out the stark contradiction in the behavior of opposition members who frequently invoke women in their speeches yet refuse to engage with concrete measures designed for their upliftment. She noted that while the House was deliberating on female security and the financial support framework, the opposition benches emptied out, only for those same members to rush back to their seats the moment the discussion shifted toward the Delhi riots. Highlighting this sudden return, she remarked that their swift reappearance stemmed from their own involvement in those historical events, proving that ordinary citizens welfare takes a back seat to their political survival.
Addressing Criteria and Financial Allocation
During the proceedings, opposition legislators questioned the rationale behind excluding women with more than three children from the benefits of this scheme. Providing a clear medical justification, the Chief Minister explained that undergoing more than three pregnancies places an immense toll on a womans physical health and long-term well-being, making this specific regulation a necessary safeguard for maternal health. Shifting focus to the monetary provisions backing the initiative, she informed the House that the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana portal is supported by a substantial budget allocation of 5,100 crore rupees for the current year. The administration has set a firm target to disburse this monetary aid to 17 lakh eligible beneficiaries this year, with a standing commitment to expand the budgetary limits if future demands require broader outreach.
Providing further insights into public reception, the Chief Minister highlighted that enthusiasm among local women has been exceptional since the rollout. Within a remarkably short span of 10 days, over 6,00,000 registrations were successfully completed through the dedicated web portal. Reaching this massive milestone in less than a fortnight demonstrates the deep trust that local residents place in the administration. Furthermore, addressing concerns and rumors surrounding the pink card distribution, she clarified that any female residing within the capital, regardless of her native state, remains fully eligible for the benefit as long as her residency in the city is established, ensuring equitable treatment without administrative bias.
