Addressing reporters in Nagpur on Sunday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched a sharp critique against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent interactions with female students in Pune, branding the Leader of the Opposition's political posture as pure hypocrisy. Fadnavis pointed out a stark contradiction, stating that while Gandhi frequently talks about empowering women, he simultaneously chose to oppose the landmark Women Reservation Bill in Parliament. Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Nagpur, the Chief Minister dismissed the Congress party as a directionless group of showmen and loudmouths whose leaders deliver speeches merely to stay relevant through television screens.
Rahul Gandhi Remarks on Manusmriti in Pune
The controversy stems from an interactive session titled 'Students' Echo' held in Pune on Saturday, where Rahul Gandhi engaged in a detailed dialogue with young female students. During the event, the senior Congress leader launched a scathing attack on what he termed the mindset of 'Manusmriti', urging women gathered at the venue to actively dismantle patriarchy. The Leader of the Opposition also took direct aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the Prime Minister expressed astonishment upon hearing about the alleged use of foul language by protesting girls during a recent demonstration at Jantar Mantar.
The Question of Women Reservation and Chitra Wagh
Targeting the opposition leader further, the Chief Minister asserted that the Leader of the Opposition must first address the pertinent questions raised by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Chitra Wagh regarding his refusal to support the Women Reservation Bill. Fadnavis emphasized that Parliament stands as the supreme institution within the nation's constitutional framework, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively working to ensure that 33 percent of all parliamentarians are women, thereby cementing their rightful place in governance.
Contradiction Between Words and Actions
The Chief Minister argued that traveling to Pune to speak about women's welfare while simultaneously opposing the very legislative measure that grants them genuine authority exposes Rahul Gandhi's hypocritical stance. He noted that delivering empowered rhetoric from a public stage while voting against the revolutionary Women Reservation Bill proves that the Congress leader is fundamentally opposed to giving women true political leverage. According to Fadnavis, there remains a massive gulf between what Gandhi proclaims in public and how he acts when it matters most.
Concluding his critique, the Chief Minister labeled Congress as a directionless organization driven entirely by optics. He claimed that their primary routine involves issuing daily rhetoric and staging appearances to remain part of the television news cycle, completely detached from ground realities. Fadnavis maintained that the grand old party has been reduced to little more than an outfit that issues hollow statements without any connection to the grassroots.
