Fragmented Opposition and Internal Strife Clear the Road for BJP in Bankipur By-Polls

A major defection from Jan Suraaj and escalating internal rebellion within the RJD have shattered opposition unity, positioning the BJP at a distinct advantage in the upcoming Bankipur by-election.

The political landscape of the Bankipur assembly constituency in Bihar is witnessing intense drama and rapid shifts ahead of the upcoming by-election. In a major setback to the newly formed third-front challenge, senior leader Ritesh Ranjan, popularly known as Bittu Singh, has resigned from the Jan Suraaj party and formally declared his support for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate. Striking a direct blow to Jan Suraaj founder and Bankipur candidate Prashant Kishor, Ranjan stated that while Kishor is undoubtedly a highly skilled political strategist, he completely lacks the administrative and leadership capabilities required to run a structured political party. Amidst this organizational instability, Prashant Kishor’s nomination schedule has undergone an unexpected revision. Instead of the previously planned date, he is now scheduled to file his official nomination papers on July 13. Highlighting this adjustment, the party president Manoj Bharti has issued a formal circular to streamline instructions for party workers and supporters.

Internal Rebellion Intensifies Within the Rashtriya Janata Dal Camp

While Jan Suraaj struggles to keep its house in order, the principal opposition party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), is facing an equally damaging internal crisis. The party leadership recently announced Rekha Gupta as its official candidate for the by-election, a decision that immediately triggered a wave of open dissent. RJD Member of Parliament Surendra Yadav shocked political observers by publicly questioning her credentials, stating he did not even know who Rekha Gupta was. Adding fuel to the fire, another powerful RJD leader, Bhai Virendra, openly voiced his deep resentment over her selection. Capitalizing on this visible friction and aiming to dent the RJD’s core support base, Tej Pratap Yadav’s political outfit, the Jan Shakti Janata Dal (JJD), has fielded social activist Veena Manvi. This strategic entry directly threatens to split the opposition vote bank. Amidst this intense organizational chaos, RJD's chief leader Tejashwi Yadav has departed on an overseas trip, leaving the local unit leaderless. This unilateral candidate selection by RJD has also deeply offended and sidelined their alliance partner Congress. Consequently, any semblance of cohesive opposition unity to challenge the BJP in Bankipur has effectively collapsed.

The Strategy Behind Prashant Kishore’s Potential Bid in the Bankipur By-Election

The Historical Legacy of Bankipur as an Unassailable BJP Bastion

The Bankipur assembly constituency was carved out during the delimitation exercise in 2010. Since its inception, the constituency has consistently elected a BJP representative, maintaining its status as a reliable stronghold for the party through successive elections leading up to 2025. In the inaugural 2010 elections, RJD’s Vinod Kumar Srivastava put up a fight but finished a distant second, with the victory margin exceeding an overwhelming 60,000 votes. By 2015, under the Mahagathbandhan alliance, the seat was allocated to the Congress party, whose candidate Kumar Ashish finished in second place. In the subsequent 2020 assembly elections, Congress fielded Luv Sinha under the same grand alliance, yet the outcome remained unchanged. In both the 2015 and 2020 elections, the margin of victory hovered around 39,000 votes. In the 2025 state elections, RJD took charge of the seat and fielded Rekha Kumari (Rekha Gupta). The BJP's Nitin Nabin secured a landslide victory by polling 98,299 votes, while Rekha Kumari managed to secure only 46,363 votes, resulting in a substantial defeat margin of approximately 52,000 votes. Crucially, this margin was recorded during a direct, consolidated contest between the BJP and the joint RJD-Congress opposition. In the current by-election, the BJP has fielded Abhishek Kumar Sinha, who will benefit from a highly fractured opposition, as three different non-BJP candidates are set to split the anti-incumbency votes.

Prashant Kishor's Strategic Challenge and Jan Suraaj's Electoral Reality

The core focus of this by-election remains on Prashant Kishor's ability to mobilize voters and establish a viable electoral presence. In the 2025 assembly elections, Jan Suraaj’s candidate Bandana Kumari managed to secure a meager ,717 votes across the entire constituency. Despite this low baseline, Prashant Kishor has decided to personally enter the fray, effectively putting his political reputation on the line. During the previous general assembly elections in Bihar, Jan Suraaj fielded candidates across 238 assembly seats but could only secure a minimal statewide vote share of 2.44 percent. Over the last seven to eight months, there has been no major socio-political catalyst in the state that Kishor can leverage to suddenly turn the tide in his favor. While Kishor's background as a seasoned strategist suggests he might have identified an underlying political opportunity, converting a previous base of 7,717 votes into a winning majority presents an uphill battle that requires an unprecedented shift in voter loyalty.

Analyzing Demographics and the Crucial Youth and Minority Blocs

Since launching his extensive state-wide foot march under the Jan Suraaj banner, Prashant Kishor has targeted voters who are dissatisfied with both the ruling NDA and the opposition Mahagathbandhan. However, translating this generalized discontent into actual votes remains highly challenging. Kishor himself is aware of the immense leverage held by the ruling establishment, which can deploy state resources and welfare policies to influence voters. Following his failed predictions regarding the JDU in the previous elections, Kishor openly admitted that the Nitish Kumar government's welfare scheme offering 10,000 rupees to women effectively neutralized Jan Suraaj’s grassroots campaign. Out of Bankipur's estimated 4 lakh registered voters, approximately 30,000 to 40,000 (about 8 to 10 percent) belong to the Muslim community. Currently, minority voters in Bihar find themselves with limited political alternatives. While they favor the AIMIM in the Seemanchal region, they have traditionally supported the RJD’s M-Y alliance in other parts of the state, though a section remains receptive to Nitish Kumar's administrative policies. Minority voting behavior consistently favors the strongest viable candidate capable of defeating the BJP, which naturally positions RJD's Rekha Gupta as their primary choice. Furthermore, the RJD has aggressively promoted a narrative labeling Prashant Kishor as a covert ally of the BJP. If this perception gains traction, it could completely alienate minority voters from Jan Suraaj. Conversely, Kishor has successfully drawn significant youth crowds to his rallies by focusing on systemic issues such as paper leaks in competitive exams, educational reforms, and job creation. However, since other opposition candidates are also targeting the exact same demographic, the youth vote is highly likely to be divided, ultimately simplifying the path to victory for the BJP.

What this means for you
