India Raises PoJK Human Rights Concerns at UNHRC
India has taken a firm stand against Pakistan on the international stage, bringing attention to the severe human rights violations occurring in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). At the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Indian diplomat Anupama Singh addressed the council, detailing the grave conditions and what India describes as a campaign of repression. She specifically referenced the tragic events and loss of civilian lives in Rawalakot, attributing the ongoing crisis across PoJK directly to Pakistan's policies.
Allegations of Repression and Violence
The Indian delegation, through Anupama Singh, stated unequivocally that Pakistan is targeting those who simply ask for fundamental provisions such as food, electricity, and their inherent rights. According to India, citizens in PoJK are met with bullets and brutal force when they voice demands for sustenance, power, dignity, and basic freedoms. This includes what India terms military occupation, control over lands, efforts to alter demographics, and the systematic denial of fundamental liberties, which have collectively brought PoJK to its current dire state.
India's Stance and Call for Action
India emphasized that Pakistan should prioritize resolving the issues faced by people in PoJK and improving its own internal conditions. The nation urged Pakistan to cease its claims on Indian territories and instead focus on the welfare and concerns of the residents under its illegal occupation.
Recent Events in Rawalakot
These strong remarks from India come amidst escalating reports of state-sponsored oppression in PoJK. A significant incident occurred on 14 June, when Pakistani security forces conducted an operation in Rawalakot. The operation aimed to disperse protesters who were staging a sit-in at the Eidgah site. During this intervention, the Pakistani Army allegedly opened fire on the demonstrators.
Accusations by JKJAAC
The Jammu-Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), a group active in PoJK, has made serious allegations regarding the 14 June incident. The committee claimed that the Pakistani Army used excessive force during the operation. They further reported that at least two individuals lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries. Following the operation, communication services across the entire Rawalakot region were reportedly cut off. JKJAAC also alleged that restrictions on the movement of food and essential goods led to severe shortages in many areas.
