A sharp political confrontation has erupted in Karnataka as senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka launched a stinging offensive against Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Speaking at a public gathering, Ashoka accused the state administration of turning undocumented immigrants into a strategic electoral asset and labeled the Chief Minister as a mere facade. He claimed that the current administration is actively misleading the residents of Karnataka.
Concerns Over Electoral Rolls and Undocumented Migrants
The allegations were made during a special event organized at the G.K. Grounds in Mysuru by the Federation of Working Communities. The ceremony was held to honor the newly elected Member of the Legislative Council, Raghu R. Kautilya. Addressing the gathering, R. Ashoka claimed that the ruling Congress party in Karnataka is engaging in appeasement tactics. He argued that illegal immigrants from Bangladesh have been integrated into the state's political framework as a reliable vote bank.
According to the opposition leader, millions of Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals are currently residing across India, with many allegedly exploiting state-sponsored welfare schemes and resources. Ashoka drew a parallel to West Bengal, claiming that the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, had previously provided state amenities to undocumented Bangladeshi migrants. He warned that the Karnataka administration is attempting a similar strategy by trying to enlist undocumented foreigners into the local voter lists through the issuance of permanent residence certificates.
Upholding National Sovereignty and Voting Rights
In light of these developments, R. Ashoka urged the public to actively participate in the ongoing Special Instrument of Revision (SIR) process. He emphasized that citizens must remain vigilant to ensure that only eligible, lawful Indian nationals are registered in the official voter lists. He firmly stated that the authority to grant citizenship rests solely with the Central Government and cannot be manipulated at the state level. Ashoka also claimed that a counter-campaign is actively working to undermine the SIR process, giving shelter and support to elements that seek to weaken the constitutional laws of the country.
The 'Tender' Jibe Against the Chief Minister
The BJP leader did not limit his criticism to immigration issues, turning his attention to the state's procurement processes. Taking a direct swipe at Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Ashoka sarcastically redefined the leader's initials. He asserted that "DK" stands for "Tender" because the Chief Minister has rushed to issue long-term project contracts despite holding office for a relatively brief period. He further quipped that Shivakumar's ascent to the top post was itself the result of a bidding process, claiming that Rahul Gandhi floated a political tender which was ultimately bagged by Shivakumar. Ashoka concluded by reiterating the BJP's commitment to marginalized communities, noting that the nomination of Raghu R. Kautilya to the Legislative Council reflects the party's dedication to providing political representation to backward groups.
