The footage, which gained immense traction on social media, has intensified the ongoing unrest and triggered a fierce political showdown between the ruling coalition and the opposition parties over police conduct and democratic rights.
Government Assures Strict Disciplinary Action
Addressing the escalating controversy surrounding the viral clip, Yogesh Kadam, the Minister of State for Home representing the Eknath Shinde-led faction of the Shiv Sena, explicitly confirmed that the involved constable's behavior was completely unacceptable. Attempting to manage the fallout, Kadam assured the public that the state administration is highly sensitive to issues concerning students and has already initiated punitive measures against the offending official. This incident has added fuel to an already volatile situation, with student demonstrations erupting at a staggering 90 different locations across Maharashtra up to Wednesday. Furthermore, the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) announced a shutdown in several regions to protest the handling of student grievances, significantly impacting daily life in those areas.
Surveillance Denials and Security Concerns Raised
As the scale of the protests continues to grow, authorities have expressed concerns regarding the nature of the gatherings. Minister Kadam noted the possibility of anti-social elements infiltrating the student movements under the guise of peaceful demonstrations. Opposition Outrage Over 'Hooliganism in Khaki'
The opposition Congress party seized upon the video on Thursday, demanding a comprehensive and impartial probe into the deeply concerning footage. The clip allegedly features the Mumbai police vehicle driver explicitly warning students that participating in the ongoing agitations would result in 50 grams of illegal drugs being planted on them, guaranteeing a lifetime behind bars. The Mumbai division of the Congress party aggressively criticized this approach on the social media platform X. "If this is true, it is not just an attempt to intimidate students, but a direct attack on democratic rights," the party stated, asserting that seeking accountability should never be met with such profound threats from law enforcement.
Demands to Trace the Source of the Alleged Narcotics
Top leaders within the Congress party amplified these grievances, expressing shock at the extreme tactics purportedly employed to suppress dissent. Harshvardhan Sapkal, the president of the Maharashtra Congress, took to X to highlight the gravity of the accusations, reiterating the specific threat of planting 50 grams of contraband in the pockets of unsuspecting youths. Similarly, Vijay Wadettiwar, the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, launched a blistering attack on the administration.
