Political and religious tensions in Pakistan have escalated further as prominent leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman has directed severe criticism toward the country's military leadership. Challenging the ongoing tactics of the armed forces, he drew direct parallels between the current volatile situation and one of the most humiliating military defeats in the nation's history. Rehman warned that if prolonged violence and civil unrest continue across various regions of the country, the ultimate consequences will be catastrophic for the state.
Drawing Parallels with December 1971
To substantiate his warning, the Maulana recalled the critical events of December 1971. He pointed out that precisely one day prior to Pakistan's formal military surrender to India, the then President and Army Chief General Yahya Khan delivered a televised address to the nation. During that speech, the leadership made grand assertions that the military would fight tenaciously in every street, field, and mountain range. However, just twenty-four hours after those tall claims, the armed forces were forced to lay down their arms and surrender unconditionally.
Direct Criticism of the Army Chief
Focusing his attack squarely on Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, Rehman stated that while he does not dispute the raw power of the military apparatus, historical reality cannot simply be brushed aside. The cleric argued that much like the rhetoric deployed decades ago, the present administration continues to rely solely on empty boasts rather than addressing the core structural and security crises plaguing the nation today.
