India's Parliament headed into its Monsoon Session with two firsts making headlines: NCPI took part in a parliamentary party meeting for the very first time, and Sudeep Bandyopadhyay signalled that the party would extend its support to the NDA government through the session.
Monsoon Session begins Monday
The Monsoon Session of Parliament opens on Monday, carrying a packed agenda of key legislation. Alongside NCPI's debut as a recognised parliamentary player, the session will also see TMC rebels seated separately from the rest of their party in the House, a visible sign of the split within the Trinamool camp.
Business Advisory Committee sets the tone
Ahead of the session, the Lok Sabha Speaker chaired a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee, stressing the importance of constructive deliberations inside the House. A similar Business Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled for Monday in the Rajya Sabha, held at Parliament, to work out how the upper House will conduct its business. BJP MP Ghulam Ali Khatana remarked that it is "tradition for all parties to sit together before session begins," pointing to the customary all-party consultations that precede every session.
A bill on insults to Vande Mataram
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to introduce a Bill that would criminalise insults to Vande Mataram, making it one of the significant pieces of legislation on the session's table.
DMK presses for clarity on Delimitation
DMK MP Tiruchi Siva sought clarity on the Delimitation Bill, a proposed law expected to reshape parliamentary constituencies, while also reiterating his party's support for the Women's Reservation law.
TMC rebels organise their own front
Separately, rebel TMC MPs held their own parliamentary party meeting, where they elected a floor leader and a chief whip, formalising their position as a distinct bloc inside Parliament even as the Monsoon Session's main agenda takes shape.
